Chelsea supporters have been reacting to Edouard Mendy’s terrific performance after sealing a Champions League final spot against Real Madrid.
The Blues, who came into the second leg with the tie level at 1-1, took the lead in the first half thanks to Timo Werner’s header.
After numerous missed chances, Chelsea eventually made sure of the 2-0 victory with Mason Mount scoring late on.
Despite dominating the chances, things could have looked different for Thomas Tuchel and his men if it wasn’t for Mendy, who produced two sensational first-half saves at Stamford Bridge.
Karim Benzema’s sharp turn and shot was denied by the Senegal goalkeeper just two minutes before the Blues opened the scoring.
Benzema was denied again by Mendy before the break, with the French striker’s header tipped over the crossbar by the 29-year-old.
Chelsea supporters have taken to Twitter to heap praise on their “world class” goalkeeper, who played a huge part in the crucial second leg victory over Los Blancos in west London.
Mendy was signed from French club Rennes last summer to effectively replace the struggling Kepa Arrizabalaga, who has since been demoted to second choice under both Frank Lampard and Tuchel.
In 28 Premier League appearances, the shot-stopper has conceded just 22 goals, whilst keeping 16 clean sheets in the process.
Speaking at half-time in the clash, former Chelsea star Joe Cole was quick to acknowledge the display Mendy was producing in the Blues goal.
Cole said on BT Sport: “Going back to Mendy, he’s been a revelation since he’s come in.
“No matter how well you defend, the back five deserve a lot of praise. But whenever I’ve watched a game this season and he’s been needed – he makes important saves.”
