Chelsea’s hopes of luring Borussia Dortmund star Erling Haaland to Stamford Bridge this summer may have been handed a welcoming boost after Manchester United confirmed that Edinson Cavani has signed a new contract with the club.

Cavani joined United on a free transfer following his release from Paris Saint-Germain last summer and has enjoyed a successful maiden season in England, with his recent form forcing the UEFA Europa League finalists to extend his stay by a further year.

Cavani, who scored in United’s 3-1 win over Aston Villa on Sunday, was tipped to leave Old Trafford this summer, with United said to be keen on luring a younger alternative to the club.

However, the club has seen enough from the Uruguay international to offer him fresh terms, meaning they may be less aggressive in their search for a new striker this summer.

The news of Cavani penning a new deal in Manchester could be music to the ears of Chelsea and head coach Thomas Tuchel, as the Blues and United are understood to be amongst several clubs keen on signing Haaland this summer, with the Blues set to prioritise adding a new out-and-out striker to their ranks.

Haaland, who has been in sensational form for Dortmund this season, scoring a whopping 37 goals in 38 appearances in all competitions, is set to be valued at more than £100million.

Although Chelsea will feel like their chances of landing Haaland have been bolstered following the news of Cavani signing a new deal, in turn possibly forcing United to cool their interest, Dortmund still maintain their stance that he will not be sold this summer.

Last week, Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke pledged that the Norway international would remain in the Bundesliga next season.

“I’ve known [Mino] Raiola [Haaland’s agent] for a long time and get along well with him. It’s no problem for us,” Watzke told Sport1.

“Erling Haaland will remain a Borussia Dortmund player next year.”

Although Dortmund have made it clear that they have no plans to sell the highly-rated youngster this summer, you can never say never in football. One large bid could prove to be too tempting for Dortmund to turn their nose up at.

A deal for Haaland is going to be prove to hellishly expensive for whoever wishes to test Dortmund’s resolve, but with United tying Cavani down for an extra year it does offer Chelsea hope that it could be one less club out of the running.

Manchester City, Barcelona and Real Madrid are also understood to hold a firm interest in the striker.
