Jamie Carragher has hit back at a Liverpool fan for criticising his decision to pick Son Heung-min over Mohamed Salah in his Premier League Team of the Season.
Both Liverpool great Carragher and former Manchester United star Gary Neville offered their verdicts on Monday Night Football, something which has stirred up quite the debate among fans.
Former player’s don’t easily disagree with supporters who admired them throughout their career. So, on the rare occasion that they do, you naturally stand up and take note of why that is.
In this case, Carragher was condemned for leaving Liverpool’s star attacking player Salah out of his best XI for this campaign, and putting in Tottenham’s Son ahead of him.
“Jamie Carragher not including Mo Salah in his Team of the Season is genuinely pathetic. Constantly trying to win over rival fans. For what reason, we’ll never know,” said the fan on Twitter.
The comment clearly triggered Carragher, who referred to the statistics to rationalise his decision.
Although Salah has more goals than Son, the South Korean has 27 goal contributions, three more than the Egyptian, and he has a better minutes per goal average.
“Son just edged Salah. Salah has also scored 6 pens. Son 1. Relax!” he replied on Twitter.
He also mentioned why he went for Son on Monday Night Football, explaining: “I went for Son. I was thinking about Mo Salah being the top goal scorer, but Son, I was thinking about goals and assists, Son has more than Salah combined,” he said.
“Obviously, Salah takes penalties, but Kane is the penalty taker, so that’s the reason for Son.”
Carragher continued by commenting on the fact that Tottenham have been a defensive team for the majority of the season, meaning that Son’s output is that little bit more impressive.
Whilst Spurs’ season has been collectively underwhelming, Son has clearly stepped up.
