Thomas Tuchel has admitted he is keeping an eye on the Chelsea players workload ahead of Wednesday’s match against Arsenal in the Premier League.

It has been a relentless schedule for the Blues this season and especially since Tuchel arrived in late January, having overseen 25 games in four and a half months.

Chelsea have launched themselves back into the top four under Tuchel’s watch as well as reaching the FA Cup final this weekend and the Champions League final in a couple of week’s time.

The head coach has shown he is not afraid to rotate his squad, he made five changes for the visit to Manchester City at the weekend, leaving Mason Mount, Thiago Silva and Ben Chilwell out entirely from the matchday squad.

Tuchel has a very realistic shot at his first piece of silverware with Chelsea on Saturday when he takes his side to Wembley to face Leicester City and was asked if he maybe had one eye on that game with his team news to take on the Gunners in the London derby at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues head coach said at his pre-match press conference: “We have an eye on the players workload and the statistics we have, who is overloaded and from that we will decide who has a risk of injury.

“Everyone who isn’t a risk will be available for the game. It’s not to manage the game on Saturday as we are in the middle of a race. It’s not the time to judge games.”

Chelsea will be without Mateo Kovacic and Andreas Christensen through injury on Wednesday for the visit of Arsenal.

Kovacic is targeting a return to the squad for the FA Cup final this week after a hamstring problem while Christensen, who suffered a tendon injury at Man City late on in the first half, had a better than expected scan result and could be back for the end of the season.

Tuchel added on his injured duo: “Kova isn’t ready for tomorrow. The personal race is on to try to make it to Wembley.

“Andreas’ was better than we feared. We hope he’ll be back for one of the two Leicester games. It will be a tough one but the season isn’t finished for him hopefully. We have a realistic hope that the season is not over for him.

“Billy Gilmour has stepped up as we missed Kova so much. We were constantly rotating between Kova, Jorginho and N’Golo. Now Kova has missed so many wells, Billy has stepped up and I am happy he has been able to deliver.

“Kova is a big, big loss with his ability to drive with the ball. He is such a positive character, a unique player and a fighter. You can always rely on him. We really miss him.
