Welsh maestro Aaron Ramsey left the Gunners in 2019, scoring 64 goals, including two FA Cup Final winners during his 11-year stint.
Ramsey was blighted with injuries throughout his time at the Emirates but when he did play he was so often a huge goal threat from midfield.
With a combination of intelligent movement and slick finishing, Ramsey developed a reputation of scoring in the big moments, bagging the winner in FA Cup final triumphs over Hull and Chelsea in 2014 and 2017 respectively.
Fast forward two years and Mikel Arteta’s men are still yet to find a like for like Ramsey replacement.
Midfield options of Granit Xhaka, Thomas Partey, Dani Ceballos and Mohamed Elneny have chipped in with a combined two Premier League goals this season, a damning statistic.
While the aforementioned players all have their own qualities, particularly in the build-up phase of play, scoring goals is clearly not one of them.
Given Arsenal’s midfielders have struggled in front of goal since Ramsey’s departure, we looked at some potential goal-scoring midfielders the Gunners should target this summer.
Rodrigo de Paul
If Arsenal are looking to target a midfielder that can add goals and assists Udinese captain, Rodrigo de Paul, would be the perfect candidate.
The 26-year-old is often utilised in the heart of a midfield three and has movement reminiscent of Aaron Ramsey. The Argentine-born De Paul can often be seen arriving late into the box with a blindside run before cooly slotting it past opposition ‘keepers into the back of the net.
In 35 Serie A games, he has chipped in with an impressive nine goals to help Udinese stave off relegation this season.
Furthermore, De Paul also has much more to his game than goals, bagging nine league assists and managing a whopping 162 shot-creating actions throughout his domestic campaign. For comparison, no Arsenal player has managed more than 96 in this statistic.
RB Leipzig captain Marcel Sabitzer has continuously linked with Arsenal’s local rivals Tottenham with Spurs still very much interested in signing the Austrian.
However, if the Gunners want to get one up on their foes they could try to tempt Sabitzer to join the red half of North London.
The 27-year-old, who has just one year left on his current contract, has found the back of the net eight times in the league this term.
The Leipzig captain has also assisted his teammates on a further five occasions across Bundesliga and Champions League play.
Sabitzer sits slightly deeper than de Paul, often controlling the game by spraying diagonal passes to Leipzig’s attacking full-backs. Therefore, a midfield partnership between the energetic Partey and the goalscoring Sabitzer is a mouth-watering prospect for the Gunners’ faithful.
Another Serie A midfielder that has all the attributes to fill Aaron Ramsey’s Emirates boots is Roma’s Lorenzo Pellegrini.
Pellegrini can play as a traditional number 10, as well as a box-to-box midfielder in a midfield pivot. This versatility would make him an excellent coup for Mikel Arteta’s side in the coming transfer window.
The 24-year-old has provided 10 goals and a further nine assists across Roma’ s Serie A and Europa League 2020/21 campaigns.
Pellegrini has 125 shot-creating actions, 63 key passes and 47 tackles in Serie A this season, statistics that suggest he is a superb all-around midfielder at both ends of the pitch.
Similar to Sabitzer, Pellegrini has just 12 months left on his current deal which could help the Gunners in terms of price negotiations if they do attempt to sign the Italian talisman.
