Arsenal complete first two summer signings as Per Mertesacker bolsters Hale End academy set up

Arsenal have bolstered their academy coaching staff amid a number of changes expected at first team and youth level this summer.

Academy chief Per Mertesacker has moved quickly to replace goalkeeping coach Andy Woodman, who recently left the club to become manager of Bromley.

Woodman is replaced by highly-rated coach Terry Mason who joins from Southend United and has vast experience at youth level with England up to under-18s level.

Tony Strudwick comes in as the new head of sports science and medicine, where he arrives from Sheffield Wednesday.

Who is Terry Mason?

Freddie Owers, goalkeeper at Terry Mason Goalkeeping Academy:

“Terry is a top coach for all ages but especially younger ages as he takes all aspects of goalkeeping into account when developing a goalkeeper, not only the essentials such as handling and shot stopping.

“He gets all of his goalkeepers to realise that goalkeeping is more than just keeping the ball out of the back of the net and is actually being part of an XI in which everything achieved on the pitch stems from the back. I became a very important part of any team I played for when using this mindset that Terry helped me to achieve.

Who is Tony Strudwick?

George Smith, football writer for and Sheffield Wednesday fan:

“He joined us in 2019 and was recruited by Steve Bruce and was seen as a real coup for us. He has been key for developing the fitness of the players and really working them hard. The first pre-season he was here, he worked the players into the ground and then some! He demands the best. The players, to my knowledge, had a lot of respect for him and liked working with him.

“Our injury record, certainly in terms of long-term injuries, has reduced since he came in. In 2017/18 we had 14 senior players out at one time. Nothing like that has happened since he came in.”

What next?

Arsenal are expected to make further additions to their coaching staff this summer with a football analyst among the current vacancies at Hale End.

The departure of Steve Bould this summer also means their is a vacant managerial post at Under-23s level, although it’s not yet confirmed whether Mertesacker will look to hire from outside or promote internally.
