Mauricio Pochettino has been linked with a sensational return to north London.
Tottenham are in the midst of a managerial headhunt as they seek Jose Mourinho’s permanent replacement following the interim appointment of Ryan Mason.
And the search could yet lead them back to the much-loved Pochettino in a shock twist after reports emerged from France this morning that the Argentine could yet leave PSG to return to north London.
The news may not have been expected, but the story is gathering pace quickly, and with that in mind, we have put together a round-up of what we know so far.
Spurs hold talks with Pochettino
Tottenham Hotspur have held talks with Mauricio Pochettino over a return to the club, football.london understands.
The Argentine left north London 18 months ago and after a spell out of the game during the pandemic signed a short-term 18-month deal with his former French side PSG.
At the Ligue 1 side, Pochettino has won two domestic trophies to break his duck as a manager but was pipped at the post to the league title by Lille this weekend.
PSG reached the Champions League semi-finals this season, sweeping aside Barcelona and Bayern Munich under Pochettino but were beaten by Manchester City.
However, PSG is a very different club to the Argentine’s previous experiences of management and it is believed that the politics behind the scenes have proved challenging for a man who essentially just wants to coach players.
football.london understands that not only have Spurs spoken to Pochettino about a return to the club but the 49-year-old would be interested in coming back to N17.
Pochettino has made no secret of his desire to return to Tottenham to fulfil ‘unfinished business’ at the club but few expected his return to potentially be this soon.
Pochettino unhappy at PSG
Reports from TF1 have claimed Pochettino wants to return to Tottenham and that he is not happy with how ‘certain things function’ at PSG despite only taking over earlier this year.
The report claims talks have already been held with Daniel Levy, but there could be a sticking point with PSG said to be completely against the idea of allowing him to leave.
Pochettino penned a relatively short-term deal when joining PSG, committing until the end of the 2021/22 season, but given his recent arrival, the French club still have plenty of say in the Argentine’s future.
Spurs could make an offer to get Pochettino out of his contract, but as the report says, the French club are not interested in allowing him to leave at this point, and they are not exactly in need of money.
