Former Chelsea left-back Wayne Bridge has warned Thomas Tuchel is going to have to “start winning trophies” if he is to survive for the long haul at Stamford Bridge.

Tuchel was appointed Chelsea head coach towards the end of January, replacing Frank Lampard, who lost five of his last eight Premier League games in charge.

Although it was hoped that the German would hit the ground running and make an impact, nobody could have predicted just how big an influence he would have had on the group of players that were struggling for form under Lampard in the latter stages of his tenure.

However, Tuchel has successfully guided them to a top four finish in the Premier League, the FA Cup final and the UEFA Champions League final, with the latter seeing them face Manchester City in Portugal on Saturday evening.

After losing the FA Cup final to Leicester City almost a fortnight ago, there is bound to be a tinge of pressure on Tuchel’s shoulders, as he chases his first trophy in charge, even though few would have tipped him to lead the Blues to this stage of the competition.

For former Blues defender Bridge, however, he believes that he needs to start adding silverware to Chelsea’s trophy cabinet, but has caveated that by insisting he doesn’t think there is too much pressure on him because of the start to life in west London he has experienced.

“No matter the result, Tuchel has done a good job,” Bridge told bettingexpert. “Lampard had done well and there was a bit of a blip, Tuchel has come in and all those Chelsea fans that were fully behind Frank, and a bit gutted to see him get the sack, have seen that he has done well.

“If he stays on he’s going to have to start winning trophies but I don’t think there’s loads of pressure in terms of what he has achieved so far in terms of where Chelsea were.

“There’s always pressure in big games, you don’t want to lose and Tuchel will put that pressure on himself to win.”

Saturday’s clash with City will see Tuchel embrace the Champions League final for the second time in less than 12 months. Last term, Tuchel watched his Paris Saint-Germain side suffer a 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich, meaning he will no doubt be all the more determined to be picking up a winners’ medal following the full time whistle this time around.

“He won’t want to lose a Champions League final again and he’ll remember what that feeling is like,” Bridge continued. “He’s at a different team and it will play out tactically to last year.

“It’s about whether he’s learned from what he does around the game in terms of getting his players ready mentally and putting on the right training, on that aspect maybe he can learn to get those players ready for the occasion but tactically it will be different.”

Although Chelsea, overall, have been outstanding under Tuchel, their form has dropped off in the past couple of weeks, losing three of their last four outings. With that said, Bridge believes they will all the more fired up for this one.

He added: “Chelsea would have wanted to end the season with better form and they were very lucky to secure fourth in the league on the final day.

“This final is a one-off game and I’m sure Tuchel will have the players ready and different players could be playing in this final than the ones from the last few games, a couple will have been wrapped in cotton wool to make sure they’re ready.

“They’ll be up for this because they don’t want to suffer another final defeat and we’ll see a different Chelsea to what we saw the last few games at the end of the season.”
