Gary Lineker has warned James Maddison against taking a “backward step” amid talk of a summer move to Arsenal.

As reported by football.london, Gunners manager Mikel Arteta is a huge admirer of the 24-year-old, but the one major sticking point for getting a deal done is Leicester City’s demands of over £60million.

With that said, there has been some encouraging news for Arsenal and the Spaniard, as according to the reliable @TheAFCBell on Twitter, Maddison’s camp are expecting an approach from the north London outfit this week.

Furthermore, it has also been revealed that an ‘offer’ of a four-year contract is already on the table where Maddison would double his wages.

Talk of the attacking midfielder making the switch to the Emirates Stadium this summer has delighted a number of Gunners fans, with many flooding to social media in a bid to speed up a deal.

With Emiliano Buendia joining Aston Villa, coupled with Martin Odegaard confirming he will be staying at Real Madrid, thus ruling out a return to Arsenal, Maddison could be the perfect addition to Arteta’s squad.

Last season, creating chances was the Gunners’ biggest problem, therefore links to Maddison make all the more sense.

However, former Leicester striker Lineker has warned the attacking midfielder against leaving the King Power Stadium, suggesting it could be a backward step to join Arsenal.

“From my experience, taking a backward step never ends well,” Lineker tweeted.

Whilst Lineker is clearly against the idea of Maddison joining Arsenal, former Gunner Michael Thomas would be happy if this transfer was to happen.

“I like Maddison and I am definitely for Arsenal pushing this move through,” Thomas told CaughtOffside. “We need to act fast, and also deal with the other issues in the squad at the same time.

“Hopefully we can then get the players in for a full pre-season where possible, ready for the first game.

“Maddison has the quality to play as a 10 or 8, which would be beneficial as I think Arteta’s preferred formation is with two 8’s.

“Injuries have hampered his England career thus far so hopefully he can have a season injury-free and prove how much quality he’s got.”
