Hakim Ziyech back and four things we spotted as 28 Chelsea players return for pre-season

After a slow start to pre-season training back at Cobham last week with just four players returning to get their campaigns underway, an awful lot more were at the training ground to start the new week.

There were 28 players involved in total at Cobham on Monday as youngsters and returning loanees were back on the manicured pitches at the training ground to be put through their paces.

Considering Chelsea had 18 players away with the country this summer at the Euros and Copa America championships, it’s still a large group of players who are back at Cobham for head coach Thomas Tuchel to run the rule over.

Much of the group was made up of returning loanees, who spent time away from the club last season with varying degrees of success.

Danny Drinkwater, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Davide Zappacosta, Conor Gallagher, Trevoh Chalobah, Marc Guehi, Malang Sarr and Armando Broja were just some of the stars back at the club on Monday.

Charly Musonda, who has seen his Chelsea career blighted by injury, was another one of the players in action.

Chelsea released a few pictures of the training session and a short video to accompany it on Monday and here are a few things we spotted.

A big group – but who is in with a chance?

As previously mentioned, there were 28 players back at the training ground on Monday but how many of them will be in Thomas Tuchel’s first team picture this season?

The likes of Edouard Mendy, Kepa, Hakim Ziyech, Christian Pulisic and Tammy Abraham (if he remains at the club) will be in the picture for Tuchel.

Chelsea’s international stars, who will make up the majority of the final squad for the Premier League, will not be back at the training ground for at least three weeks so this is a big chance for those who might be on the fringes to impress.

The youngsters

On Friday it was just Tino Anjorin back at Cobham but there were a fair few more academy players and graduates back for the new weeks.

Marc Guehi, Trevoh Chalobah, Armando Broja, Conor Gallagher, Lewis Baker, Jake Clarke-Salter and Ian Maatsen joined Anjorin on Monday to be put through their paces by Tuchel and his coaching staff.

Charly Musonda returns

It has been a very tough time for the 24-year-old, who has struggled with knee injuries over the past couple of seasons.

Many Blues fans on social media were delighted to see the forward, who joined the club from Anderlecht in the summer of 2012 along with his older brothers Tika and Lamisha, back in the first team frame after such a tough time with injury.

The returning loanees

Danny Drinkwater was one of the players back at the club in what is arguably his last chance saloon with Chelsea if he is to have any sort of impact at the club.

Malang Sarr, who spent last season on-loan at Porto, also returned for training, as did Davide Zappacosta, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and the aforementioned Broja and Chalobah.

What awaits these players in the near future we will have to wait and see but football.london understands that everyone will get a chance to impress Tuchel in pre-season to try and force their way into his first team plans for next season.

The new training kit still looks good

Well, it just does.
