With the conclusion of UEFA Euro 2020 having now been reached, full focus switches back to domestic matters and the build up to the new Premier League season.
There is now a little more than a month to go until the 2021/22 campaign gets underway and for Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel it will represent his first full season in charge at Stamford Bridge.
The German took charge in west London towards the end of January, replacing Frank Lampard, and successfully guided the club to the Champions League title, beating Premier League rivals Manchester City 1-0 in the final at the end of May.
That victory at the Estadio do Dragao was expected to spark a wave of new signings for Chelsea this summer, with many tipping the Blues to be a rather attractive proposition, because of their champions of Europe status.
However, although the Blues are working hard behind the scenes to add new faces to the squad and give Tuchel his first signing since taking the job, new additions, certainly so far, have been non-existent.
Nevertheless, it should be considered that Chelsea, who will face Crystal Palace on the opening day of the 2021/22 Premier League campaign at Stamford Bridge, are chasing big-money signings, meaning deals like that often get left until late on in the window and are rarely done before a season starts.
But whilst it is well documented that Erling Haaland of Borussia Dortmund is Chelsea’s number one target this summer, the Blues appear to be keeping their options open for when it comes to bolstering their attacking options.
That is because, according to a report by Spanish outlet Sport, the Blues are keen on signing Barcelona and France striker Antoine Griezmann. The La Liga giants have got to reduce the size of their wage bill this summer to fall back within strict La Liga financial rules, meaning offloading some of their biggest earners is the only way possible.
It is reported that Barcelona want to send Griezmann out on loan for the season, but the club to sign him will have to be responsible for the full percentage of his wage. It is claimed that the Blues have been the ‘most active in recent days’ to land the former Atletico Madrid man and see the possibility of landing him on loan as ‘very favourable.’
Griezmann, who scored just one goal during France’s forgettable Euro 2020 campaign, needs to give his ‘full consent’ to any decision that is made in regards to his future, but his former club – Atletico – are keen on him and Griezmann would reportedly love to return.
However, the deal for Atletico to re-sign him is complicated from a financial perspective, meaning Chelsea may gain the upper hand in this particular battle, as their financial situation is currently strong.
The news of Chelsea reportedly declaring their interest in Griezmann comes after Tuchel is said to have set a deadline on the club’s pursuit of Haaland.
The Dortmund striker has been heavily linked with a move to Stamford Bridge ever since the German took the job earlier this year, with Chelsea adamant that he is the difference between them becoming a top Premier League side or not.
According to reports in Germany, Tuchel wants to add Haaland to his squad ‘immediately,’ and get him embedded into the club before the new season starts.
But if Dortmund are digging their heels in and Chelsea are not prepared to match their demands, a decision must be made soon to avoid Tuchel placing all of his emphasis on one player and not being able to add him to his squad.
