Former Arsenal loanee Martin Odegaard got his Real Madrid return off to the best possible start this week after scoring in his first appearance back with Los Blancos.

The Norwegian, who spent the second-half of last season on-loan with Arsenal, returned to Spain this summer with the Gunners having failed to bring him back to the Emirates Stadium on an extended basis.

He appeared in a pre-season friendly against second tier Spanish outfit Fuenlabrada and netted the opening goal of the tie, with further strikes from Victor Chust and Mariano Diaz securing a 3-1 victory for Los Blancos at Valdebebas.

The game was an opportunity for the Norwegian to catch the eye of Real boss Carlo Ancelotti with the vast majority of the club’s main stars including Karim Benzema, Toni Kroos and Luka Modric yet to return following their exploits at Euro 2020.

Ancelotti, who moved back to Spain this summer to replace Zinedine Zidane, had previously welcomed Odegaard back into his plans according to reports.

However, Real president Florentino Perez recently admitted that Odegaard may have to once again be sent out on loan to find regular football.

Speaking in June, he said: “We have 35 players and can only register 25…Ceballos, Kubo, Odegaard, we can’t fit them all in.

“We’re talking with players and their agents. We have a lot of young players, if they can’t develop here they can go on loan and come back.”

During his previous spell with Arsenal, Odegaard made 20 appearances for the Gunners, scoring two goals.

It was previously reported that Mikel Arteta was keen on his return as the Spaniard searches for a creative midfielder in the transfer market.

The Norwegian still has two years left to run on his current contract with Real Madrid having made just 11 first-team appearances for the club in the six-and-a-half years since his initial arrival from Stromsgodset as a 16-year-old.
