Manchester United’s Paul Pogba sends message to Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka after England heartbreak

Arsenal star Bukayo Saka has received a warm message of support from Manchester United talisman Paul Pogba after England’s Euro 2020 final loss to Italy.

Saka, 19, was one of the three players to miss a penalty in the shootout for the Three Lions, as Roberto Mancini’s side went on to claim the trophy after the game finished 1-1 after extra time.

Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Saka himself came under criticism from certain fans after missing their spot-kicks for Gareth Southgate’s side.

Unfortunately, some people took to social media to hurl vile racist abuse at the Arsenal star, along with Rashford and Sancho also receiving the same horrific abuse.

Captain Harry Kane was one of a number of England players and pundits – both past and present – to come out with strong statements and defend the trio of players.

He said: “Three lads who were brilliant all summer had the courage to step up & take a pen when the stakes were high.

“They deserve support & backing not the vile racist abuse they’ve had since last night. If you abuse anyone on social media you’re not an England fan and we don’t want you.”

One of the players abused heavily on social media, Rashford, also spoke out the day after the dust settled on the disappointment of a Wembley final defeat.

In a Twitter post, the Manchester United striker said: “I can take critique of my performance all day long, my penalty was not good enough, it should have gone in but I will never apologise for who I am and where I came from.

“I’ve felt no prouder moment than wearing those three lions on my chest and seeing my family cheer me on in a crowd of 10s of thousands.”

His United teammate Pogba has now also offered his support on social media to the three abused players, including the Arsenal youngster.

“@MarcusRashford, @sanchooo10, @bukayosaka87, I am PROUD OF YOU. You win some, you lose some,” the 28-year-old said on his official Facebook page. “You took the courage to take the penalties and you showed your worth to help your country reach the final. We cannot tolerate or stand for racism anymore and we will never stop combatting it.

“You boys should hold your heads high and be proud of your confidence. You are examples of this beautiful game. Never forget that. Be proud of yourselves, the World of football is proud of you!”

Saka’s parent club Arsenal also sent out their message of support on their official social media.

The Gunners’ Twitter post read: “Football can be so cruel. But for your personality. For your character. For your bravery… We’ll always be proud of you. And we can’t wait to have you back with us, @BukayoSaka87.”

All three players, along with their England teammates, will now have some time off to recharge, before they return to pre-season training with their respective clubs.
