PSG’s confirmed £51.3m double transfer swoop could be great news for Arsenal and Mikel Arteta

Arsenal appear to be gearing up for a busy final seven weeks of the summer transfer window.

Despite bolstering his first-team squad with the signing of left-back Nuno Tavares so far, Gunners manager Mikel Arteta is being tipped to do more business between now and deadline day at the end of next month.

The latest name being linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium is that of Paris Saint-Germain defender Thilo Kehrer.

According to Foot Mercato, the arrival of Sergio Ramos at the Parc des Princes on a free transfer following his Real Madrid exit leaves the Germany international’s future at the French club uncertain.

In addition, PSG’s decision to sign Achrak Hakimi for an initial £51.3m fee from Inter Milan could limit Kehrer’s first-team chances even further as he can also operate at right-back.

As a result, the Ligue 1 giants’ double transfer swoop could be great news for Arteta as he looks to continue a ruthless overhaul of the Gunners’ first-team squad.

With that said, despite Kehrer’s versatility, the 24-year-old does prefer to play at centre-back.

“So far, I’ve played more on one side, and even higher in selection,” Kehrer said in an interview last year. “I feel good here and have learned a lot in this position recently.

“But my goal is to play more and more in the axis.”

Given Arsenal are closing in on the signing of Ben White from Brighton and Hove Albion, one would assume that if Kehrer was to join this summer he would be used at right-back as a replacement for Hector Bellerin who is expected to depart before deadline day.

Alternatively, Arteta could be contemplating reverting to a back three that worked wonders en route to winning the FA Cup less than a year after being appointed as Unai Emery’s replacement.

In this system Kehrer could be in competition with Rob Holding to partner the likes of White – if he signs – and Gabriel Magalhaes in the Gunners’ backline.

Although, Arteta has hinted at transitioning into a 4-3-3 formation at some point in the future which makes the Kehrer links all the more intriguing.
