Thomas Tuchel’s first pre-season as Chelsea head coach is underway. Yet preparing for the forthcoming 2021/22 campaign will not be easy for the German.

The vast number of Blues players involved at major tournaments this summer – namely the European Championship and Copa America – means Tuchel will not have his full first-team group available until the start of August.

Star names will return throughout the month – such as N’Golo Kante, Kai Havertz and Timo Werner – but until then Tuchel will work with the group that returned to Cobham yesterday for the first session of the summer.

“Let’s still try when we are on the pitch out here,” Tuchel explained ahead of the first session of the summer. “Try to focus, try to enjoy it, try to be positive because this is what we need.”

“So welcome on the pitch and let’s go. Shall we start? Vamos.”

It was not a strenuous workout for the makeshift squad. The players undertook a few stretches, light jogging, and some ball work before heading back inside.

However, things step up today for the group, which is made up of a handful of senior stars, returning loanees, and a few members of the club’s development squad, including Charly Musonda and Dujon Sterling.

A double session is planned and Tuchel will begin to evaluate which players have a role to play in the season ahead, which need another year away, and who doesn’t have a long-term future at Stamford Bridge.

“I like to work with players and then give my opinion,” the Chelsea head coach explained in April when discussing Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

“Maybe it’s (my opinion) also pretty quick but it will be from a direct impression.”
