Juventus have opened talks with fellow Serie A side Sassuolo over the signing of Arsenal target Manuel Locatelli, as the Old Lady look to steal a march in the race to sign the Euro 2020 champion.

Locatelli has just under two years left on his current contract and coupled with his impressive form in the most recent Euros, the Italian is angling for a move away this summer.

The 23-year-old has so far been heavily linked to Arsenal and tentatively to Juventus, but this has all changed with recent developments.

Italian transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has provided the latest on the Locatelli situation, as Massimiliano Allegri’s side have made their move to try and trump the Gunners in the race for the Euro 2020 star.

Romano’s tweet read: “Juventus met with Sassuolo today. Opening bid for Locatelli: loan with obligation to buy for €30million.

“Sassuolo refused. Negotiations with Juve will continue as they’re Locatelli’s priority.

“Sassuolo want €40m as they know Arsenal would be prepared to pay this fee.”

The latest revelation will comes as a blow to the north Londoners’ ambition of trying to bring the Serie A player to the Premier League for the upcoming 2021/22 season, now knowing that the midfielder would prefer to stay in Italy for his next move.

Locatelli featured in 34 games last season in Italy’s top league, producing a total of seven goal contributions across the whole campaign.

Coincidentally, Italian journalist Paolo Bargiggia’s prediction looks to be coming true as Juventus move a step closer to securing the signing of the highly rated midfielder.

He told Sport Witness earlier this month: “Juventus will take him for sure. The boy said no to Arsenal.

“The formula is complex: Juve are doing everything not to take him under the obligation of redemption, while Sassuolo push.

“There’s talk of a €40million operation. Eventually, it will do: one way or another.”

The Sassuolo linchpin was viewed as a possible replacement for the outgoing Granit Xhaka, with the Swiss midfielder close to joining Jose Mourinho at AS Roma.
