Arsenal are closing in on the signing of Ben White.

As reported by football.london on Friday night, the Gunners have finally reached an agreement with Brighton for a £50million deal after seeing an initial bid of around £40m rejected.

Confirmation of this transfer will come after White completes his medical – once he’s back from holiday as he was in the England squad that reached the Euro 2020 final – as personal terms were agreed several weeks ago.

Once it’s official, White will become the latest addition to Mikel Arteta’s first-team squad and bolster the Spaniard’s central defensive options that already include Rob Holding, Pablo Mari and Gabriel Magalhaes.

With White set to join the club, supporters will be looking forward to seeing the 23-year-old holding the Arsenal shirt at his unveiling – but what squad number could the defender take at the Emirates?

Well, it would appear that White has one favoured option.

Judging by his Instagram profile username ‘ben_white6’ it seems that the defender favours the no.6 shirt that has been worn by the likes of Laurent Koscielny, Tony Adams and Philippe Senderos at Arsenal in the Premier League era.

Interestingly, White has worn no.6 at two previous clubs – Peterborough United and Newport County – but had to settle for no.3 and no.5 at Brighton and Leeds United respectively in the past two seasons.

And he will miss out on his dream shirt number at Arsenal as the incumbent no.6 is Gabriel.

That’s unless the Brazilian is willing to make a change for the 2021/22 season, although no.5 – the other traditional centre-back shirt number – is taken by Thomas Partey.

White won’t be the only new arrival at the Emirates Stadium in the coming weeks with Arteta confirming that more signings are on the way amid links to Anderlecht midfielder Albert Sambi Lokonga.

“We trained really hard, played two games, and now we’re going to be travelling to America in the next week,” said Arteta after the 2-2 draw with Rangers at Ibrox.

“We didn’t have any injuries which is really positive in the first week. We’re going to have some new faces arriving probably, so very positive.”
