Liverpool have accepted that they are going to lose midfield starlet Ethan Ennis this summer, amid ongoing speculation linking him with a move to both Chelsea and Manchester United.
That is according to our sister title – the Liverpool Echo – who report that the Reds are resigned to losing Ennis, who is only 16-years-old.
The youngster, who played eight times for the club’s Under-18s last term, chipping in with five goals, is very highly rated by those on Merseyside, but they are set to be unable to retain his services, with it being reported that he has rejected the offer of a scholarship deal at Anfield in favour of moving to another Premier League club.
Interestingly, Ennis has already visited Chelsea’s Cobham training ground, posting an image of the reception area of the Blues’ academy at their Cobham training base on his Instagram page last month.
Back then, it was thought that Chelsea had won the race for the 16-year-old’s signature, but it is now reported that he looks set to join United instead, with it being reported by Stretty News that United are very close to getting a deal completed.
With a move to United seemingly all but done, Liverpool have already started planning for how they can get the very best for themselves out of Ennis’ departure, turning their focus towards negotiating a development fee for the youngster, with a tribunal a possibility if an agreement cannot be reached.
This news will be a blow to Chelsea’s hopes of adding another exciting, promising youngster to their crop of talent emerging from the club’s academy system, but there are plenty more fish in the sea.
In reality, considering that Ennis is only 16 and has grown up on the books of Liverpool, a move to Old Trafford would make much more sense for a player his age in a geographical sense.
