It has been a slow start to this summer’s transfer window for Chelsea and head coach Thomas Tuchel in terms of incomings.
With less than a month to go until the 2021/22 Premier League campaign gets under way, the Blues, who thrashed Peterborough United 6-1 in a pre-season friendly at their Cobham training ground on Saturday, are yet to complete their first signing of this summer’s window, meaning Tuchel is yet to add a single player to his squad since taking over as head coach back in January.
Although it is not for a lack of trying, the Blues are struggling to get new additions through the door, but that is purely down to the fact that they are chasing deals for big-name players who have staggering valuations.
For instance, Chelsea are keen on signing both West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice and Erling Haaland of Borussia Dortmund. Combined, they have a value of over £250million, highlighting just how difficult a market the Blues are trying to work in.
Nevertheless, Chelsea are doing all they can to reduce the size of their squad and bring in funds through player sales and cut the size of their wage bill by getting those players off their books.
After the likes of Fikayo Tomori and Victor Moses departed earlier in the window, Chelsea announced the departure of French striker Olivier Giroud on Saturday, confirming that he had joined Tomori in making the switch to AC Milan on a permanent basis.
The Serie A outfit landed for Giroud for a figure around the £2million mark, meaning that should go back into the club’s transfer kitty, even though it would make up a very small percentage of the funds they need to sign Rice and Haaland this summer.
But in a bid to keep the Stamford Bridge exit door in motion, the Blues have all but settled on their next transfer decision, with young midfielder Conor Gallagher appearing destined to leave the club again this summer.
According to a report by The Sun, Chelsea have decided that Gallagher, who featured in Saturday’s win over Peterborough, will be allowed to head out on loan once again. The box-to-box midfield ace spent last term on loan at West Bromwich Albion and hoped to have done enough to force his way into the first team fold at Stamford Bridge. However, Tuchel is open to letting him head out on loan.
It is reported that Crystal Palace, who are very close to wrapping up the signing of Blues centre-back Marc Guehi, and Newcastle United are battling it out for Gallagher’s signature, but Chelsea are not prepared to let go of the youngster on a permanent basis this summer.
Gallagher, who is highly-rated by those at Stamford Bridge, clearly has a long-term future at the club, with the Blues not prepared to sell him this summer, suggesting that he will get a crack of the whip in the first-team on a regular basis in the not too distant future.
However, the Blues, it would appear, do not believe he is at that stage just yet, with the midfielder poised to head out on loan again.
Should a deal be completed for Gallagher to head out on loan again, it would be the fourth time in his career that he has spent time away from west London, playing for Charlton Athletic, Swansea City and West Brom in the past two seasons.
