Arsenal look set to add their third signing of the summer in the form of Brighton defender Ben White.
The England international is a much-needed addition to the Gunners backline after the departure of veteran centre-half David Luiz, who left the club at the end of last month following the expiration of his contract.
Furthermore, talented French youngster William Saliba has also left the club, joining Ligue 1 side Marseille on a season-long loan – his third temporary spell away from the club since arriving in 2019
This left manager Mikel Arteta with just Rob Holding, Pablo Mari, Gabriel Magalhaes and Calum Chambers as recognised centre-backs before the Spaniard saw a £50million bid for White accepted, after having had an initial £40m bid rebuffed by the Seagulls.
With a fee between the two clubs agreed and personal terms finalised, Sky Sports have claimed that the 23-year-old is set to undergo his medical at Arsenal on Wednesday, July 28.
However, several rival fans have questioned the price tag that White has commanded, with Manchester United supporters citing the fact that they are likely to sign Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane for around £10m less as an example that English players are overpriced.
Fans of both clubs then flocked to social media to debate which club was getting the better deal. Here’s how a select number of fans reacted on Twitter to the news.
@Lzw9ine: “Imagine United signed a player like Ben White for £50m & one of our rivals signed a player like Varane for £39m.. you’d never hear the last of it btw.”
@ifthiqar: “Arsenal £50m for Ben White while united Varane for £45m. New season same banter from Arsenal.”
@AfcRoo: “Ben White is gonna have more of an impact for Arsenal than Varane will have for United And this is facts.”
@SalibaEra_: “£50M for Ben White is better than £40M for Raphael Varane. Good morning Gunners, have a good week ahead.”
@Afcsammmm: “Say it quietly but £50m for Ben White is a better deal than £40m for Varane.”
Arsenal will be hoping their fans are proved right and White can be the better signing in the long-term given Varane is five years his senior.
The Gunners appear to be building for the future, with White, Gabriel and Saliba all 23 years old or under, meaning the north London club’s backline can only get better over the next few years
