Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane looks to be on his way to Manchester United after weeks of speculation.

The France international is in the final 12 months of his contract in the Spanish capital and looks set to leave the La Liga giants after over a decade with the club.

According to our sister title, the Manchester Evening News, the 28-year-old defender is ‘on the verge’ of joining Man United after weeks of talks between the two clubs.

Varane has reportedly agreed personal terms with the Manchester-based outfit, and the two clubs are understood to have agreed a £35million plus add-ons fee for the defender, according to The Athletic.

Despite United looking extremely close to completing the deal to sign Varane, Arsenal have now been backed to make a shock move for the Real Madrid and France centre-back.

Sol Campbell, who had two spells with the Gunners, thinks the north London club should be doing everything in their power to hijack Manchester United’s move for the France international.

“I would be busting a gut to bring in Varane,” Campbell said to talkSPORT.

“When you look at it, there would be an instant impact. Look at what he has won in the game, the experience he brings to the game.

“He’s a winner and he could teach his teammates around him. That’s what you want.

“He’s young enough, he’s in his best years. He’s had a wonderful career at Real Madrid… but hey, bring him in!

“I don’t know much about Ben White, but he got into the England squad for the Euros.

“Hopefully it does work out. But if you want that instant success and you want to build a team, you bring in Ben White, but you also bring in someone like Varane – you bring both of them in!”

Campbell mentioned Ben White, and understands that Arsenal are set to wrap up the signing of the Brighton defender this week.

The Gunners recently agreed a £50m fee with the Seagulls for the England international’s services and he is expected to undergo a medical in north London on Wednesday before the club confirm the big-money signing.
