Arsenal will have to stump up the cash to sign Aaron Ramsdale this summer.
And Gunners technical director Edu might have to smash the British transfer record for a goalkeeper in order to improve Mikel Arteta’s first-team squad before deadline day.
As reported by football.london, Arsenal want to bring in a suitable backup for Bernd Leno ahead of the new season and are exploring the idea of bringing in someone homegrown to fill the position, hence links to Sheffield United’s Ramsdale.
And after having reportedly already seen two offers for the 23-year-old rejected this summer, football.london revealed last week that the Gunners were weighing up making a £30million for in the coming days.
However, latest reports would suggest that the north London outfit shouldn’t bother wasting their time.
That is because The Star claim that the Blades value Ramsdale at £40m, which represents a new asking price as just last week The Times reported that it would take at least £32m to consider selling him this summer.
This is despite Sheffield United having suffered relegation from the Premier League at the end of the 2020/21 campaign.
It remains to be seen if Arsenal increase their offer and go as high as £40m to sign Ramsdale, but with a deal worth £50m for his international teammate Ben White close to being finalised, the club has shown they are willing to spend this summer.
If they do meet the Blades’ valuation, then a piece of history will be made.
At present, Jordan Pickford is the most expensive British goalkeeper of all time in the Premier League after joining Everton for £30m from Sunderland in the summer of 2017.
So if Arsenal were to sign Ramsdale for £40m they would be smashing that record which has stood for four years.
Interestingly, former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell has already expressed doubt about spending over £30m on Ramsdale to play second fiddle to Leno.
“I can’t see Arsenal paying £30 million for a backup goalkeeper,” Campbell told the Highbury Squad Podcast. “Not in a month of Sundays. No chance. You can pay £30 million for a goalkeeper. But £30 million is a bit too heavy. I don’t think we are going for Ramsdale. I don’t honestly think that.
“What makes me say this is that there are better keepers out there that are cheaper. I don’t think it’s real. I don’t think Arsenal will spend £30 million on him. Listen, I might be wrong.”
