Arsenal continue to be linked with first-team squad reinforcements as just over a month remains until the summer transfer window closes.
So far, the Gunners have signed Nuno Tavares and Albert Sambi Lokonga as well as bolstering their academy ranks with 18-year-old Mika Biereth who joined over the weekend after turning down a professional contract at London rivals Fulham.
The next deal to be announced is expected to be Ben White’s £50million transfer from Brighton and Hove Albion as the central defender is set to undergo his medical this week ahead of finalising his move.
Once White is signed, sealed and delivered, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta and technical director Edu look set to turn their attentions towards signing a suitable backup goalkeeper to Bernd Leno.
As reported by football.london, Arsenal are exploring the idea of bringing in someone homegrown to fill the position hence links to Sheffield United’s Aaron Ramsdale.
The 23-year-old has been the subject of two bids from the Gunners so far, with the Blades holding out for a fee in excess of £40m and there have been reports of the north London outfit returning with another offer.
If Ramsdale was to join the Gunners, supporters will be looking forward to seeing the goalkeeper holding the Arsenal shirt at his unveiling – but what squad number could he take at the Emirates Stadium?
Well, it would appear that Ramsdale has one favoured option.
Despite wearing No.1 at Sheffield United last season, he wore No.12 during his first spell at Bramall Lane and during his time at Bournemouth.
At Arsenal, the incumbent No.12 is Willian, who has been tipped to leave this summer after just one season in north London.
This means Ramsdale could receive his seemingly preferred shirt number if he was to join Arsenal, but only if Willian’s exit from the Emirates Stadium is confirmed.
Alternatively, Ramsdale could take the No.13 shirt which is widely regarded as the perfect squad number for a backup goalkeeper.
That shirt number is expected to become vacant this week as football.londonunderstands Alex Runarsson will join Turkish side Altay S.K on loan for the 2021/22 season.
The Iceland international joined the Gunners from French side Dijon last summer for £1.5m, but eventually slipped to third-choice stopper after Mat Ryan was signed on loan in January.
Interestingly, Ramsdale was given the No.13 by England manager Gareth Southgate at this summer’s European Championships, so could that be a sign of things to come?
