Aston Villa announced on Monday morning that former Chelsea captain John Terry has left his role as assistant head coach.

The Englishman ended a four-year association with Villa, having spent one season as a player before hanging up his boots and joining Dean Smith’s coaching team.

Terry oversaw the Midlands club’s promotion back to the Premier League back in 2019 before enjoying back-to-back seasons in the English top-flight, including an impressive 11th-placed finish last term.

However, the 40-year-old decided that it was time for a fresh challenge, admitting that he wants to throw himself into the football management world and take over a club in the near future.

“My immediate plan is to spend some quality time with my family and, thereafter, hopefully, take up some invitations to visit clubs and managers around Europe to develop my aim and objective of becoming a manager”, Terry told the club’s website.

“It has always been my ambition to move into football management and, providing the right opportunity presents itself, I feel ready to take up such a challenge.”

Despite Chelsea legend Frank Lampard being given the managerial reigns early in his coaching career, it seems unlikely that Terry would be given the same opportunity given Thomas Tuchel’s success since arriving at Stamford Bridge back in January.

Lampard started his managerial career with Championship side Derby County and Terry may decide to follow suit in the second tier in the coming months.

Betting company Betfair place Swansea as Terry’s most likely destination, with a move to the Liberty Stadium priced at 1/8 when considering his next permanent job.
