Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers could potentially be set to scupper both Joe Willock and Ainsley Maitland-Niles’ chances of departing Arsenal this summer.
The two midfielders have been linked with a move to Newcastle United this summer as Magpies Steve Bruce continues his search for midfield recruits.
As per The Athletic, the two Arsenal academy graduates are on a list of options at St James’ Park, with Willock being prioritised following his highly successful loan spell last season in which he netted eight goals in 14 Premier League appearances.
Maitland-Niles is also under consideration as an alternative alongside Chelsea youngster Conor Gallagher.
Leicester man Hamza Choudhury is also another name that appeals to the Magpies having been linked with the 23-year-old on a number of occasions in the past, including during the January transfer window.
In the end, the midfielder ended up staying at the King Power Stadium for the rest of the 2020/21 campaign but is still believed to be keen on a switch to Newcastle.
According to The Northern Echo, Choudhury is ready to push through a move away from Leicester in order to find more regular first-team football.
Should he succeed and Leicester boss Rodgers makes the decision to finally allow him to leave, this could see the Magpies’ interest in Arsenal duo Willock and Maitland-Niles waver.
Premier League rules state that only two domestic loans are permitted at any one time meaning that should Choudhury arrive at Newcastle, only one of the two Gunners’ pair would be allowed to sign for the Magpies.
Newcastle boss Steve Bruce has already suggested that he is still looking to secure a deal for Willock, meaning that Maitland-Niles would again be left looking for different options having also spent the second-half of last season out on loan with West Bromwich Albion.
Speaking last week, Bruce said: “You have to ask Arsenal, it’s their decision and it’s the player’s decision.
“Of course we want him back, he did great with us and gives us another dimension in midfield that we haven’t got. We’ll keep bashing away at it.”
