Erik Lamela’s eight-year stay with Tottenham finally came to an end on Monday after he left the club to join Spanish side Sevilla.
Heading to Andalucia as part of the deal that saw Spurs sign Bryan Gil, the Argentine has penned a three-year deal at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium.
Plagued by injuries during his time in the capital, Lamela, who was in the final year of his contract, will be a big miss due to his ability to up the intensity of a game and make things happen in the final third.
A very popular player during his time at Tottenham, that could be seen by all the messages the 29-year-old received from his teammates upon his exit.
Sergio Reguilon was one of those to wish him well, with the left-back in fact playing a key role in Lamela’s decision to head to Sevilla.
Spending time playing for Julen Lopetegui’s side in the 2019/20 season after moving on loan from Real Madrid, the Spaniard spoke with Lamela numerous times about Sevilla and that helped make his mind up as he did initially need some convincing to leave Spurs due to his love for the club.
“I spoke with Reguilón a lot. Ever since his arrival to England he spoke wonders about the club,” he told Sevilla’s official website after joining.
“I knew that was the case – I know many Argentines who played here and they all speak well of the club. Fede Fazio, Perotti… I already knew it was a great club.”
He added: “I really wanted to play in La Liga before retiring. I still have a lot left to give, and the opportunity right now is very exciting for me.
“Sevilla is a huge club which has won several titles. I’m over the moon. I’m going to give it my all to try and help the team in any way that I can.
“I’m very confident. I’m sure I will have a great season. I hope it’s the case, it’ll help the team.
“Sevilla FC have a great squad and that’ll make things easier. I’m really excited.
“First I need to get into training and adapt myself to the needs of the squad. Little by little I’ll get my match fitness and I’ll be ready to compete.”
Taking to Instagram immediately after his Spurs exit, Lamela penned an emotional message as he thanked all associated with the club and stated that he will miss everyone.
“Spurs fans…What can I say? It was a very long journey together, maybe more than I thought, but this club has my heart,” he said.
“I feel the shirt the way you fans feel it. Many good memories over the years and I thank my teammates for these years together. I thank the people who work at the club who have always treated me excellently.
“I thank the fans for cheering me on in every game, I will miss you all. I will carry this club with me forever.”
