Granit Xhaka looks set to be an Arsenal player for the 2021/22 season.
However, at one point during the summer transfer window, it appeared that his five-year stay in north London was coming to an end as a move to Serie A side AS Roma was at an advanced stage.
As reported by football.london, Xhaka has already agreed personal terms with Roma and the Swiss international has his heart set on linking up with former Tottenham, Manchester United and Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho.
But numerous factors prevented a deal from being announced with one being Xhaka on international duty with Switzerland at this summer’s European Championships and the other being the two clubs struggling to agree on a fee.
And following Roma’s failure to meet the required £30-40million asking price, The Athletic have reported that the Gunners are prepared to perform a U-turn on the midfielder.
Having looked willing to let Xhaka leave for the right price, it’s being reported that the Gunners will count on the 28-year-old for the upcoming campaign.
Furthermore, it has also been claimed that the midfielder is also in line to be offered a new contract.
In truth, this development has come as somewhat of a surprise, but Xhaka appears to be happy to be continuing his Arsenal journey and celebrated the news with a goal in the pre-season friendly defeat by Chelsea on Sunday afternoon.
Following the game, he posted a seven-word message on social media in which he called the Emirates Stadium his ‘home’.
“It felt really good to be home,” he wrote on Instagram.
Speaking after the Gunners’ defeat, manager Mikel Arteta confirmed his stance on Xhaka’s future and revealed just how highly he values the midfielder.
“Xhaka is staying,” Arteta said. “He wanted to play. He is a key player for us.”
