Lionel Messi’s verdict that should convince Edu to complete Arsenal’s fourth summer transfer

Lionel Messi is not the only Argentine who could join a new club this summer.

Whilst the 34-year-old weighs up his next move following the shock announcement of him leaving Barcelona, compatriot Lautaro Martinez has been linked with a move to Arsenal.

Last week The Athletic claimed that the Gunners are looking to make a big-money move for the Argentina international, although a deal could be complicated with Chelsea closing in on the signing of Romelu Lukaku.

The concern for Arsenal is that if Inter Milan do end up cashing in on Lukaku, it would surely end their pursuit of Martinez as it is unlikely they would be open to selling their two most prized assets in the same transfer window.

But if the north London outfit can somehow find a way to reach an agreement with the Serie A champions for the £76.8million -rated Martinez, Messi has already explained why it would be a good decision.

“He’s spectacular,” Messi said back in 2020. “He has impressive qualities. You could tell he was going to be a great player and he is showing that.

“He’s very strong, really good one on one, scores a lot of goals and in the area he fights with anyone, holds it up, he can turn, scrap to win it all on his own.

“He has a lot of quality. He’s very complete.”

With Messi, arguably the greatest footballer of all-time, a fan of Martinez, it’s not a bad reference for the Inter Milan attacker to have.

Furthermore, Messi saying Martinez is ‘spectacular’ and ‘complete’ is the two-word verdict that should convince Edu to complete a deal for Arsenal’s fourth signing of the summer window.

So far, Nuno Tavares, Albert Sambi Lokonga and Ben White have arrived at the Emirates Stadium to bolster Arteta’s first-team squad, but more additions are needed if the Gunners are to improve on last season’s eighth-placed Premier League finish.
