Chelsea have surprisingly added another friendly to their fixture calendar with it being announced that they will take on National League side Weymouth FC.
The fifth-tier outfit confirmed the news on Friday evening, with the game set to take place behind-closed-doors at Chelsea’s Cobham training centre on Sunday, August 15.
Weymouth manager Brian Stock said: “I was contacted by Carlo Cudicini (loans manager) regarding a potential fixture on a weekend we were struggling for a fixture.
“Given the fact our league starts later than any other league trying to find a fixture was proving difficult.
“We were delighted to accept the invitation against regular senior first-team players and give our squad of players that vital tough test leading into our first league game of the season.”
The news is certainly a surprise, with Chelsea’s fixture list already packed. In fact, the game comes just a day after the European champions’ Premier League opener against Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge.
Meanwhile, Thomas Tuchel’s men are also set to travel to Belfast on Wednesday (August 11) to take on Spanish outfit Villarreal in the UEFA Super Cup.
It remains to be seen how many Chelsea first-teamers will take to the pitch against Weymouth considering the close proximity to the clash against the Eagles, which is set to take place in just over a week’s time.
According to the Dorset Echo, Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell could feature in the clash with the duo having only returned to full Chelsea training recently following their excursions with England at Euro 2020.
The Blues are so far undefeated in pre-season, having earned wins against Bournemouth and Arsenal before a draw against Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge.
