Here is your Chelsea morning digest on Saturday, August 7.
Lionel Messi had agreed Chelsea deal in the past
Chelsea target Lionel Messi nearly joined the club back in 2014 in a ‘secret deal’ amid fresh talks of a potential west London move for the Argentine after he was released by Barcelona.
Messi, 34, has a big decision to make after Joan Laporta admitted in an emergency press conference on Friday that it was impossible to keep the Copa America winner at the club due to the Financial Fair Play regulations in La Liga.
The six-time Ballon d’Or winner once “secretly” agreed to join Chelsea for £208million back in 2014, but the move fell through after his dad and agent Jorge Messi found out about these informal talks.
Sky Sports’ Gianluca Di Marzio disclosed that Roman Abramovich and co. agreed to give Messi an annual wage of $65 million (£46.7million) plus 70% of image rights, with the Argentine keen on the deal.

Niklas Sule unlikely to leave Bayern Munich
The Blues have suffered a significant blow in their quest to sign a centre-half this summer.
Whilst Jules Kounde has recently become the priority target in the defensive position, Bayern Munich defender Niklas Sule was always seen as a player who was admired by Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel.
However, he is unlikely to leave the Munich-based club in the ongoing summer transfer window, it has been claimed in Germany.
Sule is not likely to leave Bayern Munich despite the situation around his contract.
New Bayern Munich coach Julian Nagelsmann is not interested in losing him and wants the defender to be part of his squad.
Lionel Messi agrees with Thomas Tuchel and Declan Rice on Mason Mount
The six-time Ballon d’Or winner had already joined a long list of Mount admirers which include his current manager Thomas Tuchel and his best friend Declan Rice on it.
Last year, Barcelona star Lionel Messi was asked to pick 15 players from around the world that were up and coming talents that will go on to achieve great things in the future. As well as naming the likes of Borussia Dortmund Jadon Sancho and Kylian Mbappe of Paris Saint-Germain, Messi also included Mount on his list.
Messi said: “Having watched him play he has the potential to be one of the best.”
High praise indeed from the serial winner who now has a big decision to make on his next club.
