Chelsea have played four pre-season friendlies so far this summer ahead of the new Premier League campaign and the UEFA Super Cup clash with Villarreal next Wednesday.

But that is not the end of the pre-season campaign as the Blues are set to play an intra-squad match at Cobham on Saturday, believed to be against the club’s Development Squad and another is in the pipeline too.

Perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised with Thomas Tuchel, a Champions League winning head coach, leaving no stone unturned as he continues to make the most of the opportunity handed to him back in January.

National League side Weymouth will head to the Chelsea training complex on August 15, a day after the Blues open their Premier League season against Crystal Palace, for a behind-closed-doors friendly.

The top tier of non-league gets underway on August 21 and Weymouth have said they were invited down to Surrey to take on the Blues, having been contacted by Chelsea’s loans manager Carlo Cudicini to arrange a game.

Who features in that match will certainly be an intriguing one, especially if the Blues haven’t managed to shift on some of the fringe players who are not expected to be a part of Tuchel’s 25-man squad for the 2021/22 season.

Could it perhaps be one last chance for them to stake a claim? All will be revealed when the matchday squad is announced for the Palace clash. The game will also feature a majority of first team players who don’t make the matchday squad for the Palace game the day before.

Saturday’s match at Cobham is being played to get some minutes under the belts of some of Chelsea’s stars who returned late from international duty this summer and their subsequent holidays.

The likes of Andreas Christensen, Cesar Azpilicueta, Thiago Silva, Jorginho, Emerson, Mason Mount, Reece James and Ben Chillwell are likely to get a run out at Cobham this weekend but the announcement of another friendly does raise the question about Tuchel’s plans for the Super Cup against Villarreal.

The German head coach has given his returning players 45 minutes of game time in their first match back before gradually increasing those minutes – for some, not all – across the friendlies but Tuchel has been keen not to run his players into the ground in pre-season following two gruelling years amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

The news of the Weymouth match could mean that for those who returned the latest of the group to pre-season training, their match action against Villarreal and Crystal Palace could be limited.

Tuchel has plenty of players to choose from, the head coach told on Wednesday after the friendly draw with Spurs that he had 42 players at the training ground at the start of this week which is why Danny Drinkwater, Ross Barkley and others missed out against Tottenham.

Tuchel wanted to give minutes to Ruben Loftus-Cheek and also Tiemoue Bakayoko, who made his pre-season bow against Spurs.

He said post-match: “After the Arsenal game, we wrote all the names down [of the players] on a sheet as on Monday the final group of players came back from England, Italy and Brazil. We wrote the names down and had 42 players in the building, that’s just not possible.

“So from then on we had to take some decisions to provide quality and intelligent training for the three groups who belong to us. And at the same time to select players we want to know better.”

Tuchel has already described this pre-season as “unique” owing to having his players returning at different times across the summer. Some have been back almost a month while those who came back last of all have only been in training for a week.

Ahead of an expected Premier League title tilt this season, especially if the club seals it’s record transfer move for striker Romelu Lukaku, Thomas Tuchel is leaving no stone unturned as he plots a path to glory for the Blues this season.
