Three players PSG could sell to Arsenal, Chelsea or Tottenham to fund Lionel Messi deal

Paris Saint Germain are currently in talks with Lionel Messi, following the Argentine’s departure from Barcelona, the club with whom he had spent 21 years with.

The French giants are the clear favourites to sign the six-time Ballon d’Or winner, with Pep Guardiola already ruling out a reunion with Messi at Manchester City.

A deal for Messi would obviously not come cheap and PSG have already been heavily active in the transfer market, recruiting Georginio Wijnaldum, Achraf Hakimi, Sergio Ramos and Gianluigi Donnarumma this summer.

The potential revenue that a Messi deal could bring would more than likely cover the cost of his contract, but even so PSG will still need to trim down their already bloated squad.

As a result, some of these unwanted players might find a new home in London, playing for one of the capital’s top clubs.

Mauro Icardi

Through his time at Inter Milan and PSG, Mauro Icardi has established himself as one of the deadliest, and most controversial, strikers in the world.

The 28-year-old scores at a rate of a goal every other game but he endured an injury stricken campaign last season and has a reportedly frosty relationship with his teammates.

As such, PSG are looking to offload him, even if just on loan. He’d have plenty of suitors, especially in the capital, with Chelsea, Spurs and Arsenal all looking for a new No.9.

With Chelsea and Arsenal struggling to complete deals for Inter’s current forwards Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez, Icardi would provide a decent fall-back option for either of them in the short term.

Meanwhile, Spurs are bracing themselves for the departure of Harry Kane and Icardi could be the perfect replacement for the England captain.

Abdou Diallo

With the signing of Ramos, Abdou Diallo is now the fifth choice centre-back at the Parc de Princes.

Signed just two years from Borussia Dortmund, the 25-year-old’s future now appears to be elsewhere, and he’d be a useful asset for any of the London based teams.

Nuno Espirito Santo is in the process of rebuilding Spurs’ defence, with Cristian Romero, on the verge of joining from Atalanta, the first of what should be many new additions.

Arsene Wenger was previously interested in bringing the Senegalese international to Arsenal, all the way back in 2017, and Diallo’s commanding presence and ability on the ball will intrigue Mikel Arteta.

Chelsea also want more defensive cover and if a move for Jules Kounde doesn’t materialise, they will surely turn elsewhere.

Ander Herrera

As well as Messi, PSG are also looking at the possibility of signing Paul Pogba, whose contract expires next summer.

If the Manchester United midfielder does move to Paris, then former Red Devil’s star Ander Herrera will almost certainly be squeezed out.

The 31-year-old box-to-box midfielder is highly thought thanks to his tactical prowess, energy, and creativity that he displayed while at Old Trafford.

A player of Herrera’s quality is hard to find and would slot nicely into any top club’s midfield.

But whether the Spain international would be willing to take a cut to his reported £300,000-a-week contract, which runs until 2024, remains to be seen.
