Tottenham fans will hope that new signing Cristian Romero can repeat his defensive trick against Chelsea’s soon-to-be new signing Romelu Lukaku next season when they meet in the Premier League.

Romero, 23, was announced by the club on Friday night as he followed his fellow Atalanta teammate Pierluigi Gollini in making the north London switch this summer.

Speaking to the club’s official website, the central defender – who has taken over the No.4 shirt that was made vacant when Toby Alderweireld joined Al-Duhail – has promised to give his all for the Spurs.

“I’m very happy to be wearing this shirt and to come to this club. I want to thank the fans for all the messages. You wanted me here and I am here,” he said.

“Now I’ll try and respond and show faith that the club is showing in me. And I’m ready to start and give everything for this shirt. Come on you Spurs.”

football.london understands that the deal is on a season-long loan basis initially with an option to buy for £42.5million at the expiry of the deal.

Whilst Spurs fans wait for the Argentine’s debut, which could come on Sunday against Arsenal in pre-season, the talk on Twitter has been about Romero’s defensive potential against one player in particular- Romelu Lukaku.

football.london has reported that Marina Granovskaia has agreed a deal worth around £97.5m for Serie A’s 2020/21 MVP winner, as Thomas Tuchel’s side look to add upon their Champions League success of last season.

With Chelsea and Spurs set to clash in two fiery encounters next season in the Premier League, Tottenham fans have noticed something that they believe will give them an advantage over the west Londoners when they meet.

Romero was part of Gian Piero Gasperini’s rearguard who thwarted the Blues’ soon-to-be new signing in both encounters last season between Atalanta and Inter Milan.

A 1-1 draw and 1-0 defeat to Internazionale were the two scores between the Serie A duo in the last campaign.

In the latter of the two games, the Copa America winner produced some remarkable pieces of defending to stop the Belgian international, as Antonio Conte’s side were in their hunt of ending Juventus’ domination of the league at the time.

Here’s how a selection of Tottenham fans reacted to this excellent piece of defending from the 23-year-old on this occasion.

@thfcharrison_ reckons: ‘Gonna see romero pocketing lukaku at the Chelsea game, mans I can’t wait.’

@cocolamela replied to thfcharrison’s tweet saying: ‘I can’t wait to see this again.’

@akeame_ tweeted: ‘Let him do it again in the PL.’

@SofredorT’s tweet translated to: ‘I was so excited to see this…. because what a defender… but he needs a partner. And that is not Matt Doherty.’

The first occasion where we may see the two come up against each other once again is on September 19, when Thomas Tuchel’s side travel to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to take on Nuno Espirito Santo’s outfit in the Premier League.

If the 2-2 pre-season friendly is anything to go by, then we could see a highly entertaining contest in N17 which could involve both Romero and Lukaku in the heart of the battle between the two London rivals.
