Chelsea’s hunt for a world-class striker is seemingly over.
The Blues have been chasing Borussia Dortmund wonderkid Erling Haaland and Inter Milan frontman Romelu Lukaku all summer and football.london understands a fee of around £98million has finally been agreed for the latter.
Lukaku, who will reportedly join on a five-year deal, has established himself as one of the best strikers in the world in recent seasons, notching a whopping 64 goals in 95 games during his two-year stint with the Nerazzurri.
The Belgian forward was previously a Chelsea player, having moved to Stamford Bridge as a teenager back in 2011 before enjoying fruitful loan spells with West Bromwich Albion and Everton before eventually joining the Toffees on a permanent basis in 2014.
Despite featuring for the Blues on just 15 occasions, he seemed to strike a close friendship with Ivorian icon Didier Drogba, who he was previously compared to as a youngster plying his trade at Anderlecht.
And Drogba took to social media to voice his support for Lukaku, while also claiming the 28-year-old “is coming home” amid his impending return to Stamford Bridge.
Lukaku also seemingly has the support of current Chelsea ace Jorginho, with the Italian deep-lying playmaker admitting that the former Manchester United ace would be a great addition to Thomas Tuchel’s squad.
“A player like Lukaku, who has been doing great, was a champion in Italy, for sure is a player who would contribute a lot,” he said.
“Anyone who comes to contribute would be worth it. Let’s see what happens next.”
The Blues will be hoping to confirm Lukaku as an official Blues’ player before their Super Cup fixture against reigning Europa League champions Villarreal on Wednesday.
