Romelu Lukaku will follow in the footsteps of three former Chelsea players after £98m transfer

Chelsea are close to completing their second summer signing as Romelu Lukaku has agreed to return to the club – seven years after leaving for Everton.

The 28-year-old previously spent three seasons with the Blues and is set to make the switch back to west London following a successful stint at Inter Milan.

Former Fulham goalkeeper Marcus Betinelli remains the Blues’ only recruit so far and the potential arrival of Lukaku has got supporters excited ahead of the new season.

After a brief stint at Stamford Bridge, Lukaku has gone onto prove himself as one of Europe’s leading marksmen, scoring 42 goals for both club and country last term.

This has tempted Chelsea to bring the forward back to Stamford Bridge despite his disappointing first spell, where he failed to find the net in 15 appearances.

However, Lukaku won’t be the only player who has re-joined the Blues in recent years and if he follows the success of those previously, they could be in for an excellent season.

Here are the last three to return to Chelsea on a permanent deal and coincidentally, all of them won the Premier League in their first full campaign back at the club.

Nemanja Matic

Having initially joined Chelsea in 2009, Nematic Matic would struggle for regular first-team football and after a season with Vitesse, he moved to Portuguese champions Benfica.

Although his stint with the Portuguese side was successful, Matic felt like he had unfinished business at the Blues and re-signed just under three years after leaving.

The Serbian went onto play an influential role in Chelsea’s title triumph in 2014/15, featuring in all but two of their league matches during that season.

Before joining Manchester United, Matic also won another top-flight title and ended up becoming a key cog in their success under Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte.

Didier Drogba

A man who needs no introduction, Didier Drogba’s first spell at Chelsea was nothing short of remarkable.

He scored 157 goals in 341 appearances and went on to collect 12 trophies, including the Champions League, during his time at Stamford Bridge.

However, after short stints at Shanghai Shenhua and Galatasaray, Drogba returned to the Blues in 2014 to embark on his ninth season in English football and it proved to be a pretty enjoyable one.

The Ivorian helped Chelsea to their fifth Premier League title and chipped in with some crucial goals, before he left at the end of that campaign with another medal around his neck.

David Luiz

One of the Blues’ outstanding performers throughout the 2016/17 season, Luiz has built a reputation of winning trophies wherever he’s at, and it was no different at Chelsea.

During his first spell, Luiz won the FA Cup, Champions League and the Europa League, and after a successful two-year stint with Paris Saint-Germain, he was back for more.

The Brazilian returned to the club in summer 2016 following Conte’s arrival to the Bridge and he quickly cemented a starting spot in their new-look 3-5-2 formation, with Luiz on the right of the back three.

Although this was a change of position, Luiz adapted well to help Chelsea win the league in his first season, romping to victory with a seven-point cushion.

Winning the title since returning to the Blues has become a common theme in recent years, and should Lukaku sign, he could replicate the success of those former Chelsea players.
