Gareth Bale is now back at Real Madrid following his loan spell at Tottenham last season.
But it hasn’t quite been a return to remember for the Welshman, with Bale missing a penalty on his first appearance for Real Madrid since returning to the Spanish capital.
Bale, who returned to Spurs last summer for a season-long loan spell after falling out of favour at Real Madrid, has now gone back to Spain after scoring 17 goals in 34 appearances for Tottenham during the 2020-21 campaign.
He had not played for Real Madrid since June 2020 after finding his opportunities limited under former boss Zinedine Zidane, but he is hoping for a fresh start under new head coach Carlo Ancelotti.
The 32-year-old did not, however, made a great start to the new season, missing a penalty as he played the first 45 minutes of a goalless pre-season friendly draw with AC Milan in Austria.
Bale, who wore the number 50 shirt, won the penalty late on in the first half of the contest, but when he stepped up to take it, he saw his penalty saved.
Ancelotti has suggested that Bale has a future at the Bernabeu following his return, with the Welshman now looking set for more opportunities in Spain, after speculation prior to the European Championships this summer had suggested that he could retire after the tournament.
Real Madrid start the new season against Alaves on Saturday, August 14.
Spurs, who defeated north London rivals Arsenal 1-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium today in their final pre-season friendly, begin their Premier League campaign against champions Manchester City on Sunday.
