David Moyes took West Ham to a top-six finish and Europa League football via a record Premier League points tally and the Scot is aiming for more of the same this campaign.
Ahead of the start of the 2021-22 season, Moyes has set his team the target of bringing silverware back to the London Stadium.
West Ham’s final pre-season friendly was against Atalanta on Saturday and after a 2-0 win over the Italians, the Hammers lifted the Betway Cup.
After the match, Moyes joked to WHUTV: “It was good we got silverware today as well, so we’re breaking all sorts of records!”
But behind the joke was a significant message to his squad and the Hammers faithful: “Seriously, it would be nice to get something to really show for it.
“We’ve got European football to show for our endeavour last season, so now let’s aim for something else.”
West Ham’s pre-season has gone exceptionally with the team going undefeated across seven matches, including impressive wins against Celtic and Brentford along with the victory over Atalanta.
Moyes, however, is wary of reading too much into pre-season form: “I think we’re going okay with a week to go before the season starts.
“I’m not getting carried away, but I actually think we’re playing quite well so I would be lying if I didn’t think that because I think we have.”
There are areas that Moyes wants his team to sharpen up on before the clash versus Newcastle on Sunday afternoon though, with a number of players not yet up to speed after their summer international duty.
“We have got bits we need to tidy up on, like getting the international boys back to play their first bit of football,” Moyes said.
“So I hope they can pick up it very quickly. It looked today like they’re all pretty much there. We were a bit slow on the ball a couple of times but, overall, it was very good.”
