Frank Lampard believes that Mason Mount can follow in his footsteps and come back better than ever for Chelsea after his first international tournament.
Following Euro 2004, Lampard lit up Stamford Bridge on the way to the Blues winning their first Premier League title and also lifted the division’s player of the season award.
England reached only the quarter-finals that year, whereas Mount’s journey to the Euro 2020 final may leave a note of disappointment hanging heavy, but the former Chelsea boss believes it is the perfect summer to draw confidence from.
Lampard says Mount can improve from an overall positive experience.
He said: “He can and they can, the young players there. Declan Rice, Phil Foden, Sancho has come into the Premier League now. They will be better, whatever their experience was, whether it ended in disappointment to different degrees because they didn’t win, and they’d have been desperate to do that.
“Once the dust settles I think you appreciate you’ve got a tournament like that behind you, I certainly felt confidence off the back of that. Hopefully, they feel like that and take it to their club football.”
With the expected arrival of Romelu Lukaku in addition to the momentum the likes of Mount can bring to Stamford Bridge this season, Thomas Tuchel will be expected to challenge Manchester City this season.
Lampard thinks there are plenty more teams in the mix, however.
He said: “I think you can’t discount Manchester United. They weren’t far off last year and they’ve gone again and brought in really impressive signings.
“I think Liverpool will be the same, they missed huge players through injury for a big part of last season and the year before they were one of the best teams we’ve seen in the Premier League. You can’t discount them.
“As much as you can’t discount the teams pushing those from just behind. Leicester we saw win at the weekend, West Ham improved greatly, Aston Villa lose Jack Grealish but are brining in strong players. It makes for an exciting season.”
