Tottenham fans were shocked after seeing Dele Alli produce an insane piece of trickery against Arsenal’s Pablo Mari in the Mind Series ‘friendly’ on Sunday.
Alli, 25, delivered a reminder to Spurs fans of all his abilities during the game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium against the north London rivals.
After bursting on the scene initially for Mauricio Pochettino’s youthful Spurs side, the attacking midfielder has struggled in the last few campaigns, only starting seven games in the 2020-21 season.
The 25-year-old’s hit-and-miss relationship with now-former boss Jose Mourinho was part of his personal downfall, but the ex-MK Dons starlet is now eager to make a fresh start under new manager Nuno Espirito Santo.
“I want to make this year one of the best I have had,” Alli told Goal in July. “A lot of people have said I need to find the form I was in a few years ago. For me, I don’t even want to get to that, I want to go past that and reach my full potential to be the best player I can be.
“It has been a tough few years but I have been working hard and analysing what I need to do to get better. I have been training a lot on most days of my holiday. I didn’t feel I needed much rest, so it is just training the whole way through.
“Everyone is looking for that extra few per cent, so you have to keep up. I am feeling good and the best I have felt in a long time.”
Alli was named in the starting eleven that faced Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal outfit in a pre-season tournament which Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea won in the end.
He nearly scored twice with two attempts which thundered against the woodwork.
Alongside Son Heung-min’s accomplished finish to seal the win for the club based in N17, the 25-year-old’s remarkable skill on Gunners defender Mari provided the other main highlight of the derby.
On the right-hand side of the pitch in the 58th minute, the midfielder’s ability to get out of a dead-end was illustrated with his cheeky nutmeg roll on the Brazilian before being fouled by the defender.
Here’s how a selection of Spurs fans reacted to this specific incident on Twitter.
@Saucy_Skip stated: ‘Dele Alli nutmeg? 1-0 in my book.’
@ThfcAnton announced: ‘Dele Alli nutmeg he is officially back.’
@spurs_touchline admitted: ‘He’s having a poor game but I do still enjoy a Dele Alli nutmeg.’
@3blackbeard tweeted: ‘Mari getting done over by Dele Alli in 2021 is what we love to see.’
@sk1nnyburr1to replied: ‘What has Dele Alli done to Pablo Mari there?’
Espirtio Santo’s side face the daunting task of taking on Pep Guardiola’s champions in their opening Premier League game next Sunday at 4:30pm, and Alli will be hoping that his decent pre-season form is enough to see him start.
