Arsenal’s preparations for the new Premier League season are complete.
In total, the Gunners played six pre-season friendlies, winning two, losing three and coming from behind twice to earn a 2-2 draw against reigning champions of Scotland, Rangers.
However, pre-season is mainly all about implementing new ideas, blooding youngsters and most importantly getting players back up to full fitness and match sharpness.
Many can argue that there was a lack of the former at Arsenal this summer, but every player that manager Mikel Arteta is set to count upon next season got some game time, with some standing out more than others.
Even those whose futures are uncertain at the moment featured at some point.
Except for Lucas Torreira.
The Uruguay international is once again an Arsenal player after failing to earn a permanent transfer to Atletico Madrid after a somewhat disappointing loan spell last season – despite winning the La Liga title with Diego Simeone’s side.
And due to his involvement at this summer’s Copa America, Torreira was given extra time off to recuperate.
Although, with Bukayo Saka returning to training last week and playing against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, one Arsenal fan has questioned Torreira’s whereabouts after the midfielder posted an image onto his Instagram stories of him seemingly being as far away from England as possible.
Given Saka went all the way to the Euro 2020 final that took place on July 11 and Torreira’s Uruguay were knocked out at the quarter-final stage at the Copa America eight days earlier, one would have expected the latter to have been back at Arsenal by now.
But there is a valid reason for Torreira’s absence.
As explained by @afcDW on Twitter and the confirmed government guidelines for the coronavirus, because Uruguay are on the red list for the UK, Torreira has had to travel via another country to avoid being stuck quarantining in a hotel for 10 days.
Therefore, the Instagram photo of him in Madrid is because Spain is a country where he can train until he’s free to travel to England.
It remains to be seen when the midfielder will be able to report for training at London Colney, but he may not be an Arsenal player for too much longer.
football.london understands that Torreira, along with Sead Kolasinac and Willian, are all looking for new clubs but have so far not come close to leaving.
According to the Telegraph, the 25-year-old has been in talks with Serie A side Lazio as the report states that he would prefer a move to Italy, where he impressed for Sampdoria before joining Arsenal in the summer of 2018.
Valued at £18million on transfermarkt, that is a potential windfall that could help the Gunners fund a £60m move for Leicester City attacking midfielder James Maddison.
With that said, Arsenal – like many others – have struggled to sell fringe players due to financial challenges from the pandemic, so getting £18m for Torreira would be a dream scenario at this point.
