Albert Sambi Lokonga to be Arsenal’s breakthrough star as timeframe put on Mikel Arteta’s job

The 2021/22 Premier League season gets underway tonight.

And it is Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal who raise the curtain on the top-flight campaign with a short trip to newly-promoted Brentford.

The Gunners have had two miserable seasons with back-to-back eighth-place finishes and will be looking for much better this time around – starting with a game against the Bees.

But while Arsenal’s 2020/21 may be an unpredictable one – what about the rest of the season, both domestically and in Europe? How will everyone else get on?

To find out, we asked football.london‘s Arsenal writers for their takes ahead of the new season.

Who will win the Premier League?

Manchester City.

This is more in the expectation that City will sign Harry Kane before deadline day. Otherwise, I’d have gone for Manchester United.

But City with the best striker in the league and the best English talent (Jack Grealish) in their ranks added to a pretty mean defence from last season, it’s difficult to see past them.

Who will win the Champions League?

Paris Saint-Germain.

They have signed Lionel Messi, it should be almost impossible for PSG to not finally win the big one. If they can’t do it with a human cheat code, then it will never happen for them.

Who will win the Europa League?

Honestly, I don’t even know who is in it this year, but I’ll go for Chelsea after they finish third in their Champions League group.

Hey, it happened the last time they were “kings of Europe”.

Who will be relegated?

I would like to see Burnley go down, can see Southampton and Watford struggling too.

Who will be Premier League top scorer?

Harry Kane.

Regardless of what happens between now and deadline day, Kane will finish as the Premier League’s top scorer for the 2021/22 season. All that is up for debate is how many goals will he score.

I will predict 35 goals if he joins Man City. With a supply line of Kevin De Bruyne, Phil Foden and Grealish, Kane will be in dreamland after upgrading from economy at Spurs to first-class at the Etihad.

If not Kane, then Romelu Lukaku.

Who will be Arsenal top scorer?

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, but it is a tough one. Under Mikel Arteta, I can’t see anyone scoring more than 10 Premier League goals and that’s being generous.

Who will be Premier League player of the season?

Jadon Sancho.

Mark my words, Sancho is going to explode this season. Have watched him a lot over the past two seasons in Germany and he has everything in his locker to take the Premier League by storm and silence a lot of doubters.

Who will be Arsenal player of the season?

Bukayo Saka.

Who will be the Arsenal breakthrough star this season?

Albert Sambi Lokonga.

Who will be the surprise package (team)?

Crystal Palace.

Under the greatest midfield player to ever grace the Premier League, the Eagles are going to soar to new heights next season.

Who will be the surprise package (player)

Marc Guehi will be a full England international come the end of the season after a fine year at Palace.

Biggest Arsenal hot take of the season is…

Mikel Arteta will be sacked after the first six games of the season if Arsenal don’t pick up at least 12-15 points (is that even a hot take or just common sense?)

Who will win the Premier League?

I can see it being between Chelsea and Man City, with the latter just edging it. Grealish is a fantastic signing and if they can get Kane too, City could run away with it.

Who will win the Champions League?

I think it could be PSG’s turn. A front three of Neymar, Mbappe and Messi should be illegal.

Who will win the Europa League?

This is a tough one because it also depends on who drops out of the Champions League. What I do know however, is that it won’t be Arsenal! Pain.

Who will be relegated?

Southampton

Brentford

Watford

All three haven’t strengthened enough in this window so far, and the Saints especially, have become weaker if anything.

Who will be Premier League top scorer?

Harry Kane. I think Lukaku could give him a run for his money, but the Englishman continues to be one of the most clinical finishes in front of goal.

Who will be Arsenal top scorer?

Aubameyang. His recent form doesn’t exactly fill me with confidence and it also depends on if we bring another striker in, but he’s still a top player.

Who will be Premier League player of the season?

Kai Havertz. He’s looking more confident under Tuchel and is starting to impress. His talent could be about to unleash.

Who will be Arsenal player of the season?

Bukayo Saka. No doubt it will be another young gun if it isn’t, as they tend to be the one’s who show more fight and passion within this squad.

Who will be the Arsenal breakthrough star this season?

Sambi Lokonga. Still only 21, but highly thought of by Thierry Henry and Vincent Kompany. He looks like the next big thing. Huge potential.

Who will be the surprise package (team)?

I think this could be between Crystal Palace and Norwich City. Both have made quite a few smart additions and they appear to be much more prepared than previous seasons.

Who will be the surprise package (player)

It may not be a surprise to some due to his recent season in the Championship, but I think Emi Buendia will light up the Premier League too. He’s a top player who reminds me of Santi Cazorla, and we all know how special he was!

Biggest Arsenal hot take of the season is…

As an Arsenal fan, this is extremely difficult to answer because my expectations are so low. Sad, I know. A top four finish? Never say never, the Premier League is capable of being unpredictable. Anyway, a man can only dream!

Tom Canton – Arsenal Fan Brands Writer/Presenter

Who will win the Premier League?

Manchester City

Even without Harry Kane, who at the time of writing remains a Spurs player, they have the best squad. Add the England captain to the mix and it becomes almost silly. Guardiola will complete the treble this season.

Who will win the Champions League?

Manchester City

To win the treble, a Champions League is needed and I believe the Citizens will indeed go that one step further than they managed last time out.

Who will win the Europa League?

Marseille

Good signings and a wild managerial decision in Jorge Sampaoli, Marseille have all the ingredients to take on Europe’s most unpredictable competition.

Who will be relegated?

Watford, Norwich, Southampton

I think Southampton have been on the downturn for some time and losing Danny Ings may be the last nail in the coffin. Watford and Norwich are simply not strong enough in my view; the Canaries in particular after the loss of Emi Buendia.

Who will be Premier League top scorer?

Harry Kane (Hopefully not in a Tottenham shirt)

Who will be Arsenal top scorer?

Alexandre Lacazette

This is on the proviso that he remains an Arsenal man. Effectively whoever is the Gunners’ number 9 this season is a shoo-in for this accolade. Goals from outside of this role have been far and few between.

Who will be Premier League player of the season?

Kai Havertz

The German international and Champions League goalscorer will explode this season. It is scary how young he still is.

Who will be Arsenal player of the season?

Ben White

Arsenal have needed this signing for a long time and even with their improvements in defence, White will show the difference between incremental steps forward in a position and a leap.

Who will be the Arsenal breakthrough star this season?

Sambi Lokonga

His confidence is brilliant to watch. His comfortability on the ball is a blessing. Simply pre-season is all it took for me to fall for the Belgian’s talents.

Who will be the surprise package (team)?

Brentford

I like them, a lot. Ivan Toney has the talent to be a Premier League striker and the goals to boot. His supporting cast hasn’t been tinkered with too much in the window. Besides the opening game of the season and the return against Arsenal next year, The Bees have my backing.

Who will be the surprise package (player)

Enock Mwepu

Having followed him at Red Bull Salzburg and pined for his signature by Arsenal this summer to add quality and depth to the midfield, I cannot wait to see how he gets on with Graham Potter and Brighton.

A versatile player, whose height does not hold him back from galloping upfield to aid in attacks. Yet another brilliant Salzburg find set to grace the Premier League.

Biggest Arsenal hot take of the season is…

No matter what happens to Arsenal form, position in the table, and what is seen on the pitch, Mikel Arteta will not be sacked throughout the campaign.
