Arsenal fans are not confident on the whole that Mikel Arteta will steer the club to an unexpected top four this season in the Premier League according to the latest football.london survey.
The Gunners have finished in the same position of eighth placed in consecutive seasons, as the north Londoners prepare to navigate their way up the table.
Arteta’s side face Premier League newcomers Brentford away from home in the curtain-raiser game which is being broadcast on Friday Night Football.
Positivity has been hard to come by for fans of the north London club, who have seen their great rivals Chelsea add to their trophy collection in recent times as Stan Kroenke and Edu continue to rebuild and move on from the Arsene Wenger era.
Arsenal’s manager in his pre-match press conference for the game on Friday has told fans to be ‘excited’ ahead of the 2021/22 campaign with the signings of Ben White, Albert Sambi Lokonga, and Nuno Tavares plus potentially more being the tonic that should raise fans’ spirits ahead of a new dawn.
However, the results in our pre-season predictions survey ahead of the new Premier League campaign illustrates the disparity within the fanbase when it comes to the confidence radiated by certain sections within the Gunners set up.
Over 6000 Gunners fans had their say on the club’s season – picking out three key players as well as a Premier League finish.
Unsurprisingly, only 33% of Arsenal fans believe that the club will finish inside the top four which is significantly less than half who participated in football.london’s survey.
36% (18% each) feel as though the Gunners will come close with a 5th or 6th place finish which is still relatively low.
In terms of top scorer, star man Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is once again being tipped by his own fans to be the top scorer at the club this season over the likes of Alexandre Lacazette and Nicolas Pepe.
45% of fans taking part picked the Gabon forward to score the most goals this season, with the Ivorian winger second in the vote with 26%.
It was actually a new signing who topped the vote for being the surprise star of the season, with young midfielder Sambi Lokonga expected to make a real impact as 41% of Gunners fans have high hopes for the young Belgian International.
There were a number of young academy products who broke through the ranks to establish themselves as key first-teamers in the squad roster with Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe the pick of the bunch alongside Olympic gold medallist Gabriel Martinelli.
Fans picked Saka to be the young player to watch in this upcoming campaign with 29% backing the versatile Englishman for big things once again this season.
23% picked the ‘Croydon De Bruyne’ to shine the most out of all the youngsters, whilst Martinelli and Lokonga picked up 13% of votes in this specific category.
8:00 pm on Friday, August 13 will give the footballing world and most importantly fans of the north Londoners their first taste of what to expect from Arteta’s newly refreshed Gunners outfit.
