Arsenal may have discovered the deadline to complete Tammy Abraham transfer after £97.5m deal

Romelu Lukaku’s return to Chelsea could have major implications for Arsenal.

The Belgian international is back at Stamford Bridge – seven years after leaving on a permanent basis – as his club-record £97.5million transfer was officially confirmed on Thursday evening.

Lukaku is expected to be Thomas Tuchel’s first-choice centre-forward for the upcoming season which could open the door for Tammy Abraham to depart between now and deadline day.

The 23-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to Serie A side AS Roma this week, with it being reported that the two clubs had agreed on a £34m fee for a potential transfer.

It has even been reported in The Athletic that Roma’s general manager Tiago Pinto was expected in London over the next 48 hours to put the finishing touches on the deal.

However, as of right now, Abraham remains a Chelsea player.

This could be good news for Arsenal who have also been linked with a move for the striker as Mikel Arteta looks to bolster his attacking options that already include Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette, Folarin Balogun, Eddie Nketiah and Gabriel Martinelli.

In a boost for the Gunners, football.london understands that Abraham’s preference is to remain in England this summer instead of moving abroad, but a potential move to the Emirates Stadium relies solely on a striker departing the club before deadline day.

With that said, there’s a scenario where Chelsea could want to get Abraham’s future sorted by next weekend.

As revealed by The Athletic, Lukaku is set to make his second debut for the Blues when they visit the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, August 22.

Other than not being registered in time to face Crystal Palace in Chelsea’s opening Premier League game of the season this weekend, a possible reason for the delay could be shirt number related.

Upon sealing his return to west London, Lukaku’s shirt number hasn’t been confirmed by Chelsea just yet, despite being listed as No.18 via the Premier League’s official website.

Having worn No.9 for club and country in recent years, it could be that the 28-year-old is waiting for Abraham’s departure to be confirmed so he can swoop for his favoured shirt number.

If that is the case, and the plan is for Lukaku to feature against the Gunners next weekend, then Friday, August 20, could be the deadline to complete a deal for Abraham in order for the No.9 shirt to become available at Chelsea.
