Every word Nuno Espirito Santo said on Harry Kane, Man City, transfer plans and Cristian Romero

How are you feeling after six weeks at Tottenham?

It’s been good. Everybody feeling good and working very hard preparing ourselves. We are almost ready to go. We start on Sunday.

What are you expecting from Man City in this first game and Jack Grealish?

We expect a tough match, very tough match. Of course quality players and a very talented squad. We expect a tough match like all the matches in Premier League. All the squads have very good players.

Have you had a chance to speak with Harry Kane and can you tell us more about that conversation?

Yeah Harry joined the group today, he trained, we had a talk. Of course it’s a private conversation but everything is OK. He’s preparing himself, like Bryan, like Romero, players that joined us later. We have to be careful but everything’s OK.

Is he available for selection on Sunday?

We still have the session of tomorrow to decide, like I mention to you Romero, Bryan, Harry, players that don’t have too much and too many sessions with us. We have to think and we still have the day of tomorrow to make decisions.

Do you expect Harry Kane to be a Tottenham player at the end of the transfer window?

He’s here with us, he’s here with us. He’s a Tottenham player. He’s here with us. We have to think about tomorrow. Let’s prepare the training session of tomorrow and go day by day. All the players who have worked with us are our players.

Is there a reason behind Tanguy Ndombele’s absence and does he still have a future at Tottenham

There’s always a reason in all the decisions we make. There’s always a why because we think, we talk and then we decide. We believe that Tanguy didn’t perform in the pre-season matches because we consider that it’s not the right moment for him to be with the group in terms of competition.

Are there any specific areas you are looking to strengthen in the transfer window?

The squad needs balance. We have a very talented squad but needs to be balanced. We know, everybody knows, Fabio and Steve are working very hard. But like I say, it’s always hard to improve something that is good. We have to be really, really accurate on the players we bring because have to bring things that we believe can make us better and stronger. It’s not easy because we have quality players with us.

Is this the perfect time to play Man City?

It’s the time the schedule says. We have to play all the opponents of the Premier League two times, two times. We start with City and it’s about us. We know we are going to face a tough opponent, a quality opponent but it’s about us.The things we want to do in the game, the way we want and how we want to compete. We are focused on ourselves and trying to be a good team.

Should players and fans read much into your team selection on Sunday?

Every match we have to decide. We play on Sunday, we still have the session tomorrow to decide – there’s no reading behind that. It’s who and how we believe we should compete.

Will Steven Bergwijn and Lucas Moura have more of an attacking role this season?

They are attacking players, like Harry, like Bryan. Players that need to perform in the final third of the pitch. It’s up to us as a team to try and create, and build and produce chances for them to do what they do best. They are so talented and I expect of course that the main part of the game will be the offensive part. But their tasks are also defensive in terms of shape, and recovering to the loss of the ball. The game is so dynamic that so many time players are out of position and they have to perform and do tasks outside of the team.

Many one on one meetings/sessions with players?

One on one, two on two, three on three, four on four, one on twenty, one on 25. It’s the way we work – we speak constantly. My way is about dialogue, about listening a lot and then working. That’s what I do most is work.

Confusion over Harry Kane return? His statement etc? The truth?

I think there’s no confusion at all. Harry had to submit himself to the protocols of the quarantine. He had to be in isolation. He did it here at The Lodge. There’s a long period he had to be by himself. It’s not easy at all. Then he produced a negative test and he joined the group.

The confusion over his return on the first Monday, I mean?

That is your confusion. It’s not our confusion.

Do you mind having an unhappy player in the squad?

Look, my job is to prepare Tottenham players the best that I can. I don’t have any concerns on trying to convince players to play for Tottenham. It’s such a huge club, it’s such a fantastic club that we should be proud of being here. My job is to prepare. Players know that That’s the way we work. I prepare them every day.

What is the ambition for you and Tottenham this season?

The training session tomorrow, we don’t go beyond that.

Are there still players you want to get in and out during the transfer window?

It’s easy to understand. While the transfer window is open, we have to be very, very aware of that. Because sometimes you have to react, sometimes you have to act. When I say act, our squad is talented and quality but we have to balance and there are positions that have to be well-balanced in terms of what we look for all the year. We have to realise anything can happen in football, anything.

Is talk of Harry Kane’s future a distraction?

Look, we cannot control what’s happening outside the building. The news, speculation, rumours. All these things that surround us as a club. But we as a group of players we close ourselves. That’s the best way to prepare ourselves. Among us cannot be distractions. We’re clear on what we have to do and we have a shield. We have to protect that shield as best we can.

What have been your first impressions of Bryan Gil since he returned to training?

He’s young, very talented. We saw him before we brought him but very talented player. Very good one-v-ones. He needs time. He needs time not only because of his age but the way he plays football. He’s going to face the toughest competition in the world in the Premier League, where are the best players, the best defenders. So it’s going to be hard. We’re here to support and help him and find the best solutions for the team. But very talented player.

Japhet Tanganga came off against Arsenal with a knock, what exactly was that issue and is he available to start this weekend?

He had a problem in his adductor that was getting stiff. We decided to take him out, he had a couple of days recovering and doing some treatment. He joined the group. We have a lot of issues of course that we have one more session to decide but he’s an option for Sunday yes.

Has Cristian Romero recovered from his injury?

Yes, he is not fit, because players that didn’t have too many sessions, Romero, Bryan, Harry, we have to try and balance the situations but the injury was in the Copa America, he had holidays, he didn’t totally recover, but he has been able to train and he is doing well. Players that don’t have too many sessions we have to be very careful when we put them on the pitch.

Can you explain why you don’t think Tanguy Ndombele is ready to play?

It is about us to decide the right moment to use the players we have available and when we decide we consider many aspects, not only what we want, but what we think the players we should do. Like many players in our squad it is not easy to adapt to a new idea, a new philosophy, but we keep on insisting and believing that this is the right way and the right moment will come when we believe when it should be.

What has surprised you about the group during pre-season?

I don’t consider that there was a surprise, but I think adaptation to something new. Players knowing us as a coaching staff, us knowing players, the images, all the matches we saw, it’s working together, it’s feeling each other, not only on the pitch but socially. Everything is going normally when it is not too much time. As time goes by I believe we will build a bond between us that will make us stronger and we are in that process.

Can you see Son playing more through the middle this season?

Yes I do. That’s why we decide to play Sonny with Lucas and Stevie on the wide areas because we believe with the talent he has he can do good things. Son is a player who can, besides all the talent, has energy and has adaptability and is versatile enough to play in different positions in the front three, one of those in the central areas.
