Patrick Vieira delivers Thomas Tuchel verdict ahead of Premier League opener against Chelsea

Patrick Vieira has heaped huge praise on Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel ahead of the London derby at the weekend in the Premier League.

The Blues boss hasn’t put a foot wrong since arriving in west London midway through last winter, most recently adding the UEFA Super Cup to the UEFA Champions League win that the German has achieved at the club.

Accomplishments that have earned him rightful praise from a large number of people in the footballing world, with Crystal Palace manager Vieira the latest to praise the ex-PSG boss.

The Arsenal legend knows the 47-year-old briefly from his short stint in France with Nice when Tuchel was heading Paris Saint-Germain.

The two now meet again on Saturday in a London derby which has been known to deliver exciting contests over the years and many will be expecting the same this weekend.

One big plus for the south Londoners is that they will not have to face the daunting task of trying to keep Blues’ new signing Romelu Lukaku quiet in what could have been his debut game.

Regardless of the Belgian’s absence, the 45-year-old believes the magnitude of the challenge that faces his Eagles side in this contest is the same.

“Yeah, it’s going to be a challenging game, obviously, because of what they’ve been doing in the last couple of months,” Vieira stated in his press conference ahead of the game.

“They won the Champions League, winning the [Super Cup].

“We are looking forward to it. I think you will have to play those kinds of teams because you know the Premier League is really competitive.

“There are some strong teams, and we will have to play them. Obviously, starting with Chelsea will not make it easy, but we have our belief, we have our self-confidence as well as a football club, as a team, and we’re gonna give ourselves the best chance to go there and compete against them.”

When asked about the Chelsea manager, the player that was a fundamental part of Arsenal’s invincibles side didn’t hold back when complimenting his fellow Premier League manager.

The Frenchman said: “He is one of the great managers around the Premier League – in Europe.

“He’s got a really strong team around him and Chelsea are playing well, playing really good football.

“Obviously, it’s going to be a challenging game for us. And like I said previously: we are up for it. We’re gonna give ourselves the best chance to perform, and we will see at the end.

“But we are believing in ourselves and with the difficulty of course that we will face, we are going to be up for it.”

Despite losing both matches in the 2020/21 season, Palace have an okay record in this London derby, especially at Stamford Bridge.

2-1 wins in the 2014/15 season and Chelsea’s title-winning season of 2016/17 lives long in the memories of Blues fans who will be hoping this doesn’t happen again in the opening fixture of the 2021/22 campaign.
