Thomas Tuchel has confirmed Romelu Lukaku will not make his second Chelsea debut against Crystal Palace tomorrow as the striker is currently quarantining following his club-record transfer from Inter Milan.
The Blues officially completed the signing of the 28-year-old from the Serie A champions yesterday in a club-record deal that football.london understands is worth around £98million.
Chelsea initially struck a deal with Inter for Lukaku a week ago but there was a delay in getting all the paperwork signed off and Lukaku only arrived in England on Wednesday.
The Belgian has yet to train with his new teammates and is having to self-isolate having arrived in the United Kingdom from Monaco, which is currently on the Government’s Amber list.
Tuchel said: “Romelu did everything to take this little chance to make it [his move to Chelsea] happen. He was a huge player for Inter with all the responsibility on his shoulders and he brought a big title to Inter.
“So it was important to us it was his desire to rejoin Chelsea and finish his project and story. That was very important.
“We have a strong group that is defined by a strong bond. There is a certain attitude to be ready to help each other out and support each other.
“We think Romelu, having played in the academy and always having Chelsea in his heart, is the perfect addition to the group. He embodies all that we are proud of at this club and team.”
“We’ve had some exchanges on the phone, exchanges of messages, but right now he is following the protocol and quarantining some more days. We will work on the details and we will be very happy when he is on the pitch.”
