Here is your Chelsea morning digest on Saturday, August 14.

Blues offered Robert Lewandowski

Prior to sealing a club-record deal for Romelu Lukaku this summer, Chelsea were also reportedly offered the chance to bring in Bayern Munich hitman Robert Lewandowski.

According to Christian Falk, via his Bayern Insider podcast, the Blues were offered the chance to make a move for the Polish forward by his agent Pini Zahavi.

In the end, the west Londoners chose not to pursue a move for the 32-year-old and instead went on to sign Belgian frontman Lukaku instead.

Lukaku number ‘leaked’

From one man who could be playing at Stamford Bridge to one who actually will be now as Lukaku’s new Chelsea squad number has been inadvertently ‘leaked’ by the Premier League.

Via the league’s official squad page for Chelsea, Lukaku was listed as the Blues’ number 18 ahead of the 2021/22 season kicking off, with Tammy Abraham retaining his number nine shirt.

If that is indeed the case, the Belgian actually regains the number he was originally assigned the first time he signed for the club nearly a decade ago having seen it recently vacated by Olivier Giroud.

David Luiz makes Carragher jibe

Elsewhere, former Chelsea defender David Luiz has hit back at scathing criticism from Jamie Carragher.

Having been regularly castigated by the ex-Liverpool centre-back, the Brazilian said: “It is funny, some people talk about how to win the Premier League, but they have never won it. Jamie Carragher never won the Premier League.”
