When Willian completed a free transfer to Arsenal in the summer of 2020, the reaction amongst the fan base was divided.
Plenty of supporters were satisfied to see an experienced former Brazil international, who is a proven winner at club level, join the Gunners on a free transfer, but there were people sceptical of the deal.
Willian was said to have wanted a three-year deal at Chelsea before he left the west London club, with the Blues reluctant to tie the 33-year-old down to such a lengthy contract considering his wages and age.
So, Arsenal swooped in and signed the Brazilian, but his first season at the Emirates Stadium was far from ideal.
Now, football.london understands that Brazilian club Corinthians are in talks with Willian over returning to his home country.
Football agent Kia Joorabchian, according to Globo Esporte, via Sport Witness, is ‘key’ in an outgoing move for Willian.
Joorabchian, who has represented high-profile players from the world of football, is working with Corinthians to try and secure a transfer for Willian.
“We’re looking forward to making this happen. For me it’s very important to help as much as possible,” Joorabchian told Globo Esporte.
It’s also stated that for a deal to happen, Arsenal would need to loan Willian out and continue to pay a sizeable chunk of his wages.
Willian, when speaking about his future in April earlier this year, revealed that his plan was to stay at Arsenal and help the north London club to win trophies, but things have seemingly changed.
“Well my plan is to stay at Arsenal, I have a contract here, and to win trophies,” the Gunners man said.
“I have two more years here and my plan is to stay and be successful, to play and win something with the club.
“I still want to achieve a lot of things. I want to win more trophies, and I want to be at the next World Cup.
“I will do my best to be there. But yeah, I want to lift trophies for Arsenal – I have a lot of things in my mind that I want to achieve.
“I want to win as much as I can with the team, and go back to the national team as well.”
Willian has not featured in either of Arsenal’s opening two Premier League matches this season.
