Chelsea take big step in securing £42m transfer as Jules Kounde breakthrough is made

Chelsea have reportedly made a breakthrough in negotiations to sign Sevilla defender Jules Kounde.

The Blues have been interested in the France international for a while now, but have found negotiations with the Spanish club difficult due to a disagreement in valuation.

However, according to Gianluca Di Marzio, a €50million (£42.7m) deal to sign Kounde is “almost done”.

Fellow Italian football journalist Fabrizio Romano also took to Twitter to share the latest on the 22-year-old defender and said that Chelsea confirmed to Sevilla on Wednesday afternoon that they wanted to “proceed with the final official bid to complete the deal”.

Now, a deal for Kounde does rely on the sale of Kurt Zouma, with Chelsea looking to offload the France defender before they can complete the signing of the Sevilla star.

Zouma is of huge interest to West Ham United, but football.londonunderstands that a move to the London Stadium is now in big doubt.

“Multiple” agents are thought to be involved in negotiations for Zouma, which has proved to be problematic in striking a deal.

Despite this, talks are ongoing for the Blues centre-back and both parties are still determined to get this deal over the line sooner rather than later.

The 26-year-old defender, who has just under two years remaining on his existing contract with Chelsea, looks set to leave Stamford Bridge in the coming days.

Blues supporters may be hoping he can secure a move to West Ham, if a deal for Kounde is to be struck, with Chelsea and Sevilla both said to be open to the £42m transfer.
