Mikel Arteta has selected a strong line-up for Arsenal’s Carabao Cup second-round clash away at West Bromwich Albion.
The Gunners are looking for their first win of the 2021/22 season after losing 2-0 to both Brentford and Chelsea, and Arteta looks to have selected an almost full-strength team for the clash at the Hawthorns.
New signings Aaron Ramsdale, Nuno Tavares and Martin Odegaard are all in from the start for the visitors in the Midlands.
The team in full: Ramsdale; Tavares, Calum Chambers, Rob Holding, Sead Kolasinac; Mohamed Elneny, Granit Xhaka; Odegaard, Nicolas Pepe, Bukayo Saka and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Arsenal fans, when taking to Twitter to share their thoughts on the team news, were very pleased to see Ramsdale and Odegaard from the start, but were slightly baffled by Kolasinac’s inclusion.
Arteta, when speaking about re-signing Odegaard this summer, admitted that he didn’t think it would be possible at one stage.
“I was really happy [to sign Martin] because at one stage we thought it wouldn’t be possible. Madrid wasn’t very keen on selling the player,” Arteta admitted.
“Martin always expressed his desire to come, but it wasn’t looking very possible.
“Then the door opened and straight away the club was really supportive and Edu did a great job to manage the situation and we got the player that we wanted and we know because we have experience already with him for six months.”
Odegaard will have the chance to really cement his spot in the first-team this evening at the Hawthorns – and it also represents a great opportunity for Ramsdale.
Many expect Bernd Leno to continue as Arteta’s first-choice goalkeeper, but Ramsdale will be doing everything within his power to try and persuade his manager to start him for this weekend’s away clash with Manchester City.
